Been working my way through the marvel movies, and I'm struck by how perfect Robert Downey, Jr. is as Tony Stark. I started thinking about best castings.

  • Robert DeNiro in Casino and Goodfelllas comes to mind (as does Brando in The Godfather).
  • Eastwood as the Man with No Name.
  • William H Macy in Fargo.
  • Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona.
  • Iam Mckellen as Gandalf.
  • Sean Connery as James Bond.

Lots to choose from. Your favorites?

All criticisms about later seasons aside, Game of Thrones was nails on so much of the cast. Ned, Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, Tywin, Daenerys, all the Stark kids. So many actors who fit their book characters to a tee and really brought the story to life.

Pretty much everybody in Harry Potter.

Despite the end product, I think Martin Freeman was great for Bilbo Baggins.

Betty Gilpin made The Hunt for me.

I definitely agree with the Game of Thrones cast.

Mmm, I dunno I feel like Michael J Fox missed the tone of the movie a bit. I always thought maybe like a young Eric Stoltz could have done that part more justice.

so many good ones already mentioned.

more than 30 years later, hans gruber is still one of the best movie villains of all time and i think there's a very small chance of that being the case if he's played by anybody other than alan rickman.

for that matter, casting willis as john mclane wasn't an obvious choice either and worked well.

for more recent films, give me keanu as john wick.

Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey

A lot of actors do a great job, but in the end are replaceable. The character would have certainly been a little different, but you would still have the story and a few new wrinkles. I really think Jimmy Stewart is irreplaceable as George Bailey. It's not only the every-man, good hearted nature. It's the mental breakdown he goes through. Considering Stewart's very real war experiences it's entirely likely we are watching someone with PTSD on film, and at a time where that wasn't something to show or discuss.

Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber is so great too.

I'll add in George C. Scott as Patton. I think the bio pic is especially difficult to cast. While fictional characters are open to interpretation, you can't cast a bio pic without the audience doing a comparison to the original. Not only on the physical side, but also the character.

Finally, on the other side of the coin when it comes to playing real people is Jason Issacs in The Death of Stalin playing Zhukov. From the moment he comes on screen, you know you are watching a fictionalized caricature but it's absolutely riveting. I don't know if that is just a great script or if Issacs added the right mix.

The only issue with GCS playing Patton was the voice.
If audiences had been familiar with Patton's voice it might not have been so well received.

We watched the Movies that Made us on netflix last week, then my wife watched die Hard for the first time ever. Alan Rickman is so fantastic in that movie. There's nothing better than a villain you can identify with, laugh with, and root for.
