Both Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill worked well for Superman

Michael Keaton as Batman was initially a WTF casting that I believe worked out much better than anticipated

Harrison Ford as both Han Solo and Henry Jones Jr

Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downy Jr as Iron Man

In a difficult cast to assemble, the rebooted Star Trek cast, especially Chris Pine as Kirk and Karl Urban as McCoy (I say difficult because the original cast is so well known)

Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber

Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator

John Belushi as Wild Bill Kelso (P-40 fighter pilot) in 1941 and John Blutarsky in Animal House

Ian McDiarmid as Senator/Emperor Sheev Palpatine

The only issue with GCS playing Patton was the voice.
If audiences had been familiar with Patton's voice it might not have been so well received.
You are correct with regards to the difference in voices and also highlight the difficulty in casting the bio pic. You can't just make a duplicate of the person. You need to know what to ditch. I don't know the audience would have cared that Scott's voice wasn't as high pitched or as affected as Patton's was.

Hamilton represents the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to casting real people. On one hand it's accuracy to historical events, the in depth look at the issues of the time, and the real political conflict in both the Revolution and in Federalism is unmatched in any acted performance i can think of. On the other hand no one cares that the cast has a different skin color or is speaking in a manner completely different than the real people.

Rickman as Gruber is of course incredible.

I am surprised however that Rickman has not been named for his role as Snape. Can not envision anyone else in that role.

He's perfect as Snape, and so is Maggie Smith. Of course, Maggie Smith is pretty much perfect in everything.

Disagree, Maggie Smith was not convincing as Snape.

The cast of The Princess Bride.

Andre the Giant? Why would you seriously consider that guy? But wait, he was awesome - on film. It took a lot to capture his charm on screen. It's not that Andre wasn't a great guy or didn't try hard - he was and did - but he was no actor, could barely enunciate English, was constantly in pain from a lifetime of being huge and wrestling, and was a highly functional drunk to numb that pain.

Throughout the production, Wallace Shawn was terrified that he was doing everything wrong and was going to be fired and replaced.

Now I'm imagining the series with those two roles switched for those two actors, and it's still awesome.

Two different casting types here though:

1. Folks cast against already established characters in books, comics, other films.
2. Spontaneous castings for wholly new characters.

For #1, I'm particularly intrigued by Robert Downey Jr. because that one feels like where the casting of the movie character has retroactively overridden the already established character. He is Ironman.

I have no idea how the comic character was/is even portrayed. Was he like Downey's character?

Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco as Lefty Rugiero

Dennis Franz as Detective Andy Sipowicz in NYPD Blue

Larry Hagman as JR Ewing in Dallas (maybe the best casting of all time actually)

Anyone else playing Vizzini would be, dare I say it, inconceivable.

His performance in this was even better than his oscar winning performance.

You could probably say the same for Jackman's Wolverine, but it's worked out pretty well for the movie series. I don't think a short, ugly Wolverine would have been nearly as popular.

Right, I'm just saying if we find RDJ being the perfect casting to his comic counterpart (like many do), then Pratt as Star Lord wouldn't count.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Star Lord of the MCU and Chris Pratt even more. It fits well for the MCU.

I think you could swap Chris Pratt and John Krasinski pretty easily in the Star Lord role. Or really a lot of other roles.

Not sure if it's the look, the acting, or both that make for great casting. As for Harry Potter, I agree most of the characters were extremely well cast, but I would say of all the major characters I could imagine a better cast Draco Malfoy.

I'm kind of surprised everyone is spouting "Harry Potter" without anyone having an issue with Daniel Radcliffe. I thought just about every casting in those movies was near perfect, but Daniel Radcliffe was a horrible Harry Potter, in my opinion. I especially hate that the little brat didn't wear the contacts to make his eyes green. I just don't think Daniel Radcliffe is a very good actor. I categorize him in the Jesse Eisenberg group. Too many of their personal ticks and "isms" come out in their characters. That isn't good acting, imo. That's not to say I don't like some of Jesse Eisenbergs movies. Some of those ticks and isms can sometimes fit into a role, like Eisenberg in The Social Network. However, I don't think he is a very good actor in the same way i don't think Radcliffe is (wow, I sure went on a journey)

To be hones, I really don't think any of the child actors in those movies were that great. The adult actors, however, were absolutely perfect (minus Dumbledore #2).

I'm surprised we've gone this far without Rami Malik as Freddie Mercury. After a few minutes into that move, he IS Freddie Mercury. The guy they cast as Brian May was also absolutely perfect.

I could not see anyone else ever playing Gandalf other than Ian McKellen.

A lot of MCU stuff here, but I would have to throw in Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster. I mean... just so fantastic among so many other fantastics.
