Newman and Redford as Butch and Sundance! They and the whole cast are great in "The Sting", for that matter.

F. Murray Abraham and Thomas Hulce in "Amadeus". The former is the best acting job in the history of cinema, and the latter is so surprising as Mozart and yet perfectly works for the story.

I agree with F. Murray Abraham, but I don't believe he ever landed another major role.

Some others that I have thought of ...

Gary Oldman as Sir Winston Churchill, The Darkest Hour
Sean Connery as Professor Henry Jones, Sr, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Tom Hanks as Sgt. Miller, Saving Private Ryan
Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, Escape From New York

So good he's coming back in the latest series of Spider-Man movies.

I finally watched Justified in recent months and thought of him and Timothy Olyphant as Raylond Givens as perfectly cast. Their final scene together in the finale was a pretty outstanding ending.

Still on the TV front - I thought Edward James Olmos as CMDR William Adama in the 2000's Battlestar Galactica as perfectly cast. He, and Mary McDonnell, brought a lot of gravitas to that series that could have just been another campy sci fi show.

Before I even opened the thread I was thinking RDJ as Tony Stark.

Marvel did pretty damn good all around.

The recent star trek movies did well with
-Pine as Kirk
-Quinto as Spock
-Cumberbatch as Kahn
-Yelchon as Chehkov (rip)

I saw that on tv the other day. I've only read a couple of the novels and it has been a while, but I thought that the writing and casting both totally missed the character. A tiny man wisecracking and swaggering around isn't it.

Does it speak to our misogyny that we have listed very few actresses in perfect castings?

This thread has a lot of popular characters and powerful characters.

Like you might say James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader but I think there are a lot of strong baritones that might have carried the role.

Alan Rickman WAS great as both Hans and Snape (even though they made Snape a lot more attractive than his book character).

Someone commented that the thread isn't about the fact that Hugh Jackman was much too tall to play Logan (taller than Cyclops in a weird twist) but it was a valid complaint.

The cast of Taxi had a lot of standouts who so personified their character that you couldn't see that actor in future roles without seeing their Taxi character (Lloyd and Kaufman, especially).

Some of these roles, like McConaughey in TD s1, Zach Galifianakis in anything, you wonder how much was the character playing themselves versus how the writer planned the portrayal.

I'd like to see a thread about actors who seem to be able to play a variety of roles. Like which of us foresaw the crazy taxi driver from the tv show Wings, could play an OCD detective so well?

I don't know if it counts, but Douglas Rain as HAL in 2001 has the perfect voice for that role.

Glad J.K. Simmons was mentioned, was getting worried y'all missed him.

Henry Cavill as Geralt in the Witcher is perfect.
