Steve Lukather played on "Beat It" and "Physical" and a bunch of stuff before, between, and after those songs. He's pretty good.

Insane musical chops across the board. Rhythm carried by an iconic shuffle beat, combined with a consistent piano. Great horn arrangements and a way overlooked, super cool end guitar solo. Love it. I won't fight you for that opinion.

I think the recording itself sounds kind of meh, though. A little muddy for my tastes. And the video is pretty hilariously bad.

Why would anyone fight you over something nobody cares about?
People care if pop songs are catchy. That's the entire point. There's no credit for playing harder instruments.

Just trying to understand why you're so upset about something that seems made up. Could you share the rest of the top 5 that this impressive Toto classic beat out?

The fact that you think anyone is upset or feeling any sort of emotion about this (other than confusion about why you feel the need to be a dick all the time) is pretty astounding.

"Fight me" is a pretty common trope as far as online discussions are concerned.

Maybe switch to Sanka.

Good thing you exempted the Dan, or we'd have a dust-up.

I've read in several different accounts that the guys running the sound boards for rock bands in the late 70's/early 80's would put on Aja or Gaucho to set up the EQ in the arenas.

Ya....if he hadn't excluded Steely Dan, I was going to roast him.

There are a half dozen better Cure songs than that. Friday I'm in Love is the Cure's Shiny Happy People.

Phil Collins / Phillip Bailey
"Easy Lover"
Solo is somewhat overly compressed, But solid

I would also put "Billie Jean", EWF "Let's Grove" and the Cars "Drive" , The Cars' nearly perfect pop song(listen on headphones)
The "noises" in the background are superb that add to the despair
An early entry is Stevie's "Superstition" - in "the pocket" type rhythm section - economical production at it's finest

What's considered pop rock? Are The Beatles pop rock? The Beach Boys? If so, Toto doesn't come close to an album like Pet Sounds. What about Prince? I would definitely call When Doves Cry and Little Red Corvette pop songs. Paul Simon's Graceland is high up there as well.

But to me it is the most pop of all their songs

And I just love it. Especially David Gray's version

I've always thought Simple Minds' "Alive and Kicking" was the best technically produced pop song of the '80s. It's truly superb.

EDIT: Of course....Aja is definitely no pop song
