Steely Dan. Holy ***** Took me a while to get into them, but once it took it hit pretty hard. Donald ***en is a genius, plus Larry Carlton on guitar here...

One of the live audio mixing classes I attended many years ago used "I.G.Y." and "Green Flower Street". Check out "The Nightfly". It's brilliant from start to finish.

Also, check out Rick Beato's episode on "Kid Charlemagne".

I'm not sure I know any Steely Dan songs. What is their top one?

Reelin' in the Years is their most famous song.
Deacon Blue says hello.

Steely Dan being exempted from this conversation.....

Fight me.
Good thing you exempted the Dan, or we'd have a dust-up.

I've read in several different accounts that the guys running the sound boards for rock bands in the late 70's/early 80's would put on Aja or Gaucho to set up the EQ in the arenas.
Screw it....I'm overriding OP. What do you think.....Aja? I say Aja...

EDIT: Of course....Aja is definitely no pop song
Aja is at the top of the list, yes.

As far as radio songs, I'd put Deacon Blues there by a nose over Josie.

Here's Rick Beato's take on Rosanna. Music lovers should check out some of his other videos. He has a ~30min interview w/ Texas treasure and guitar legend Eric Johnson on his channel that is priceless.

When you have time, watch this documentary about the making of Aja. ****ing incredible.

Here's the portion about Deacon Blues specifically:

All done analog, on tape. Just boggles the mind.

And yes whoever mentioned Pet Sounds earlier, that goes without saying. Aja and Pet Sounds are two of the greatest albums of all time (super hot take there, I know).

As a stand alone single though, I still think Rosanna is just a remarkable achievement....I mean it's just perfect. And again, all analog. The talent in those bands. Jesus.

Rick Beato's channel is awesome. Well worth subscribing, even if you're not a musician. In truth, it's even more vital if you're not. You'll gain a much stronger appreciation for the artistry behind these famous songs.

He also had Rosanna as the #2 drum intro on his top 20 list

I've always thought Simple Minds' "Alive and Kicking" was the best technically produced pop song of the '80s. It's truly superb.

Great song. It and their bigger hit are two of the best of the 80s.

I'm a huge fan of the production on "All the Things She Said" too.

Both of these are in my "Reference Tracks" playlist for performing live sound checks. The bridge from 3:29 to 4:00 on "Alive and Kicking" is perfect for checking bass, drums, and backing vocals, for example.

Has anyone mentioned "Owner of a Lonely Heart" yet? (That's also one of my favorite reference tracks.)

Never cared for the original, but I really liked their unplugged version along w/ The Sun Always Shines on TV.

The line "It's no better to be safe than sorry" is perfect.

Just trying to understand why you're so upset about something that seems made up. Could you share the rest of the top 5 that this impressive Toto classic beat out?

The fact that you think anyone is upset or feeling any sort of emotion about this (other than confusion about why you feel the need to be a dick all the time) is pretty astounding.

"Fight me" is a pretty common trope as far as online discussions are concerned.

Maybe switch to Sanka.

Express is a noted moron. Best to utilize the ignore function.

Quoting you below this. Still the most accurate description I've read.
