A world without Star Wars

I was listening to a podcast that talked about the influence Star Wars had on androids in science fiction, and it got me wondering how different the world would be if Lucas had never created Star Wars.

Just off the top of my head, the following movies wouldn't exist.

Every Pixar movie (Spinoff of Lucasfilm)

Indiana Jones series (It may have possibly existed, but not from Lucasfilm and certainly not starring Harrison Ford)

Terminator, and likely every James Cameron movie (The reason he became a director is because of Star Wars)

Moonraker (Made due to the popularity of Star Wars)

Spaceballs

Would possibly not exist:

Jurassic Park (Was mainly possible due to the innovations created by ILM and advanced by the Indy tv series and later T2.)

Alien? (This one feels very insipired by Star Wars, but I'm not sure if it was.)

Guardians of the Galaxy (It's really hard to imagine it existing without Star Wars)

Star Trek (Abrams reboot; Feels very SW-influenced)

I'm sure there's a ton of other things. (Movies, series, music, etc.)

What else comes to mind?

Fantasy Sci fi generally was legitimized by that movie.
Commercialization of movies (action figures etc).
Might not have gotten Carrie Fisher.
And oh yeah, none of the increasingly crappy sequels.

And the world would be a crappier place without this.

That would be a great movie. Some B-movie director wakes up (possibly from an accident) in a world that doesn't know anything about Star Wars. Once he realizes what's going on, he sets out to make Star Wars HIMSELF and becomes world-famous in the process. The only problem is that he forgets some of the minor character names and a few of the more obscure details about the Galactic Senate, mildly disappointing a handful of others who also remember Star Wars. Near the end, he becomes so enraged by the greedy Hollywood machine that he leaks a digital copy of his creation on BitTorrent, then goes off to live happily ever after with his girlfriend.

Moonraker was a book long before it was a movie. Now, I've not read the book, but I'm guessing that the book bears little resemblance to the movie they released. That movie did have a definite influence from Star Wars. And at the end of every Bond movie, there was always a blurb about James Bond returning. At the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, I believe it said James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only, but they changed their plans after the massive success of Star Wars.

Alien was written prior to the release of Star Wars, so quite likely there is no influence. Similarities, sure. Released by 20th Century Fox, set in space, and a few shots similar to the opening of Star Wars with the camera looking at the underside of the Nostromo as it passes overhead.

In a world without Star Wars, I would be the most successful, hard-working person alive. I'd have an extra 23 hours a day to do things.

Why is that? GotG was a Marvel comic. 1st appearance of the characters was in 1969. SW released in theaters almost 10 yrs later.

Instead of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, there would have been a Star Trek: Phase Two TV series.

I'm no comic book expert, but I'm fairly sure the original GOTG comic you're referring to bears almost no resemblance to the version the movie is based one, which came out in the 00's.

And obviously that version has some heavy Star Wars influence.

Starlord's Han Solo vibe
Rocket Racoon as an animal sidekick
The particular blend of humor and sci-fi that was popularized by SW

Sort of how Spider-Man comics existed way before the Superman or Batman movies, but the 2002 movie has almost no chance of existing if not for those very successful adaptations that opened the door for comic book movies.

Per wiki:

Despite these rewrites, 20th Century Fox did not express confidence in financing a science-fiction film. However, after the success of Star Wars in 1977, the studio's interest in the genre rose substantially. According to Carroll: "When Star Wars came out and was the extraordinary hit that it was, suddenly science fiction became the hot genre." O'Bannon recalled that "They wanted to follow through on Star Wars, and they wanted to follow through fast, and the only spaceship script they had sitting on their desk was Alien". Alien was greenlit by 20th Century Fox, with an initial budget of $4.2 million.

"[Star Wars was] absolutely seminal for me, that first one that George Lucas directed," Scott told Deadline in 2015.

"I cancelled the film I was going to do, after I saw Star Wars. I'd finished The Duellists, which upon reflection is a good film that got a prize at Cannes I enjoyed making The Duellists so much that I decided, with [producer] David Putnam, that I'd do [medieval romance] Tristan and Isolde.

"I was in LA to show The Duellists and David said, 'There's a film called Star Wars at the Chinese. I can get two tickets, do you want to go? I think you should go.'

"We went to an afternoon performance at 2:00, I was eight rows from the front with David Putnam. I never saw or felt audience participation like that, in my life. The theater was shaking. When that Death Star came in at the beginning, I thought, 'I can't possibly do Tristan and Isolde, I have to find something else'.

"By the time the movie was finished, it was so stunning that it made me miserable. That's the highest compliment I can give it; I was miserable for a week. I hadn't met George at that point, but I thought, '**** George'.

"Then, somebody sent me this script called Alien. I said, 'Wow, I'll do it'. I was the fifth choice. They'd been to people like Robert Altman. How could you offer Robert that movie? He'd be like, 'This thing comes out of his chest, are you kidding?' But I knew what to do.

"I read it and said, 'I'll do it!' I'd been in Hollywood 22 hours. They said, 'Do you want to change anything?' Nope. 'Do you?' Nope. I love it. I love it. I'm in."

Well okay, the success of Star Wars prompted the studio to finance Alien.

Any thoughts on the evolution of VFX / CGI without ILM?

How different is today's landscape without it? Does WETA exist? Digital Domain?

It's really hard to say for sure, honestly. I think those two companies specifically, do not exist. But maybe some other entity would have been created to take its place. Who knows, maybe started by Spielberg rather than Lucas.

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. A remake of "Yesterday" with "Star Wars" as theplot theme.

Could take it a step further with castings and "what-ifs" if other original casting ideas had taken lead rolls first

That Ridley Scott alien story...
If it did that to an adult in the industry, then try to imagine what that movie did to those of us who were kids at the time. The quantum leap It brought and just the wonder of it really might never be replicated in cinema.

For this then 12 year old, it truly was life changing.

My friend's mom drove us the 25 miles to the Galleria in Houston around week 3 of it's release and waited with us in line nearly 2 hours to see it (2 hours during a weekday by the way). I will never forget watching the beginning in that theater, hitting you right away with the best special effects I'd ever seen. I can still see myself sitting there in awe over 43 years later.

I already liked Star Trek and other science fiction, but lots of my friends thought it was stupid. Two neighbors in particular made fun of me when I excitedly told them about this amazing new movie. A few weeks later they were sporting Star Wars tshirts and had seen it multiple times. It was such a game changer.

What if they had her do something to prevent everything from being sucked out, instead of the mary poppins routine?

When those spy reports first came out, they made it seem like she was going to use the Force to basically hold that part of the ship together and keep the energy of the blast from hitting everyone else until they could evacuate the bridge. then she alone "absorbs' the blast and it knocks her into a coma.

But on the other hand, my daughter who was nearly 6 when she saw it, and my best friend's son, who as 9, both called that the best part of the movie when we took them to see it, so it's definitely a matter of perspective.
