I bought one of the early Kindle's in 2012 and made the mistake of reading Game of Thrones there. I was so confused until I got to the end and realized that in the back of the book there were house genealogies and a map. Been back to physical books ever since
This is exact reason why I only buy Fantasy genre in hardback. Having to flip around to look at genealogies or more often...maps....that absolutely sucks in Digital and Paperback for that matter. Maps don't translate well to Kindle and get blurry and the print is too damn small in paperback.

Games - Digital; don't even understand the point of owning physical media

I used to think that I wanted to have physical media due to the issue of licenses ending and then you might lose your digital version.

Now, games that come on a disk are just half finished and you have to download huge updates anyways. It really makes having the disk pointless.
That and with Steam sales, Xbox Gold and Gamepass the idea of getting in my car just to go buy a game is a waste of gas. To be fair, I'm assuming the physical media market for games still has some demand for lower income folks who may not have fast internet connections.

I actually still buy CDs. My Tundra doesn't do tech well. I could control Bluetooth via my phone but that's a PITA when driving. For example I can stream Spotify to my radio and move up/down tracks, but I haven't figured out how to change lists other than grabbing the phone and taking my eyes off the road.

I've started moving towards digital purchases for movies.

I buy books physically, and everything else digitally. Heck, almost every book I own physically I also own digitally.

Books - Physical.

Music - Digital. Though I still pay for/download songs and albums individually via the iTunes Store, as I want to completely own my music and not be 100% reliant on a subscription streaming service.

Movies - Both physical and digital. I don't buy as many discs as I used to, but I do still buy 4K Blu-rays of my favorite movies of the year (maybe five or so titles per year), as the quality is simply better than 4K streaming, and again, I don't want to rely solely on streaming, should Apple or whoever remove or edit titles. That said, I do download all of my physical purchases via Apple TV, for quick access, and even though the physical 4K quality is better, I admit it's way easier and more convenient to watch movies digitally.

I actually recently moved into a new place, and literally just finished setting up my physical movie collection in my office...

Because someone will inevitably ask why the gaps...

Row 1 = 4K Blu-rays + Blu-rays that are part of franchises that have 4K titles
Row 2 = Criterion Collection Blu-rays
Rows 3-6 = Blu-rays
Rows 7-8 = DVDs

Yes, I'm a freak when it comes to this stuff, and proud of it.

For the past 5 years or so I have exclusively bought digital tv/film/music. Most of my books are digital too, but I have a kid so we buy a ton of kids books. Anything nonfiction that I think I might want to highlight or make notes in, I'll buy a physical copy.

I don't purchase anything digital except maybe the occasional song I like from a particular artist. Everything else totally physical.

Digital can be taken away too easily IMHO.

Anyone remember when (maybe ten years ago) Netflix received massive backlash after announcing they were separating the streaming and mailed disc businesses? Now it seems crazy that anyone would care or even notice.

Because the streaming had been included in the cost of their service. Then they stripped it out and made it a separate service. But left the price of the disc service the same.

Didn't they also try to rename their brands? I remember my dumb self thinking "that's stupid".

Or are those 2 separate incidents?

same they split and called the disc option Qwikster....wow.

And instead of $10 for both - they wanted $8 for each effectively a 60% rate hike.

cancelled the plan about a month later.

Last physical medium I got was a box set of the Batman trillogies - happened to be working for WB television distribution at the time and I won a xmas party game. Turns out - you should have a blue ray player for that and I never opened it.

Stopped buying CDs in the early 2000s. I've got google music for some stuff...really just stream free music services and I'm ok with it. My wife bough Taylor Swifts last album for my daughter so they could get something special for the concert (can't remember what). Otherwise - nothing for the family.

My wife still gets some magazines, but she's the only one who reads them. I have one kid who's a historical fiction nut and just bought a book yesterday at barns & noble. They were just killing time, though. He's 90% of all books bought in the last 5 years.

I used to travel (pre-covid) every week. Never had a book with me - always the phone.

I'm all-digital with music. Still haven't gotten on board with streaming audio like Apple Music or Spotify, mostly because the quality isn't great and the eq options within most of those services are limited. I wish there was a way to get high-def audio more easily. For now, I'm sticking with iTunes purchases so I can have my own copies...and listening through an app like Korg's iAudioGate that enhances the sound of mp3's to give CD-quality depth. That's been my best method for higher quality sound...which is important to me.

For movies, I still like to get physical blu-ray because the sound is the best. Those usually come with a free digital download anyway...so I figure I'm getting more for my money than just straight up buying a digital by itself. I keep my VUDU library up to date though. You can even add even convert many bluray/DVD titles for a few bucks, which is good for older movies that didn't come with their own digital copy.

We love old movies. I personally believe 1938 to 1948 is the best decade of movies ever. We could argue with the beginning and end years, but its in the ballpark. This weekend, I've watched:

June Bride - 1948
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House - 1948
A Night at the Opera - 1935

Its just more fun to own the physical copy of these, so we are mainly physical.

My son (15) is now into vinyl, so that's growing in the house.

Books are physical, except for the occasional audiobook.

if you dont own it physically, you dont own it at all, and you have no control over whether you can play it, watch it, or ever hear of it again.

why do you think they are pushing streaming everything?

why do you think auto makers are pushing new real time connectivity? you wont even own or control your own car if you buy new. its already here with the c8 corvette.

Movies Video Games: I try to go digital as much as possible but there are a lot of times when the physical disc goes on sale for significantly cheaper than the digital version. If i do get movies I will generally stick to ones that come with a digital copy though (again a lot of times its cheaper to buy the blu-ray combo than the digital movie).

Books: Almost all digital. I have a handful of my favorite books physically but they mostly just sit on a shelf and look pretty, I still go to the digital copy if I want a re-read.

Music: The vast majority of music I listen to is on streaming. However I am known to buy a vinyl, CD, or cassette (cassettes, despite all odds are making a comeback). If its an album I really like I try to purchase it in some form be it digital or physical. I also still like going to used record stores and combing through the CD selection but try to limit it to things that don't exist on streaming like certain soundtracks, compilation albums, or odd singles / ep's.

I have concerns about the longevity of digital and what will happen long term. We've already seen this play out with the switch from Ultraviolet to Movies Anywhere with movie collections and Google Play Music shutting down. But physical media isn't as permanent as we think is it either. I've had lots of CD's, DVD's and older game discs that were just sitting in a shelf become unusable do to CD rot. How many times has a flood / hurricane / water leak destroyed a book collection?

True, almost everything is going to a subscription/lease model these days. Not sure what they are doing with the C8, but some of the higher end makers will let you pay an exorbitantly high monthly fee to just drive whatever car they make off the lot. You can swap out models whenever you feel like something different.

We still buy some physical books for this reason and will never get rid of any hardbacks. And we've kept certain movies from our old physical library for this reason (ex: Blazing Saddles and Gone With the Wind).

Just fyi, the c8 is rolling out new electronics soon to be in all gm cars. Other makers going the same way.

The car's modules are all in real time comm with gm, who can reprogram anything on the fly.

The car has electric locks, shifter, throttle, steering, brakes too, lights, starter button, etc.,

Which means that they (or law enforcement, government, or a hacker or thief) could intentionally or accidentally through a bug or something, deny you the ability to start, stop, get in or out, steer or see at night.

In other words, it is only your car as long as they let you control it. Of course that is quite a dilemma for aftermarket mods too.

Yes, I just did a trial for that.

It was pretty good, but I can still get more depth with some of my other audio player apps that lets you eq the music so I didn't think it was worth the money. It has potential though. I like the simplicity and ease of the Amazon Music platform overall.

Books - physical - I haven't really tried a kindle but most of my collection are cookbooks, and I give away or trade in non-cookbooks at HPB unless it's something I want to go back and read again

Music - I buy records for favorites and things I want to collect, but most of my library is in Google Music. Annoyed about having to switch to YouTube Music since I don't like the app

Movies - I use Kodi with Seren and real debrid so I can watch anything I want, but I have a few select favorites on blu-ray.

Games - half and half

John Deere has been at the forefront of this. Claiming all of the CPU and architecture is their IP and limiting farmers the ability to upgrade and maintain their equipment on their own. pretty disgusting stuff.
