I tried to include all the suggestions given on the nominations thread. For those that did not make the poll, I either could not find the scene for the suggested piece of music or I could not determine the name of the piece of music or its composer. For thinning and seeding purposes there will be five preliminary pools with 15 scenes apiece in which you can select as many as you think deserve to move on the main event. In other words, if you believe all 15 scenes in a particular pool are deserving you'll be able to select all 15. You'll have approximately 24 hours to let your opinion be known for each preliminary pool.

Amadeus is an all time fave but how about Excalibur and Carl Orff? O Furtuna/Carmina Burana. Perfect for the scenes and the movie.

All of these are great, and the Strauss waltz to the space station would get my vote of these options, but we have to mention the unique zither-played "The Third Man Theme". Spoilers would include putting a specific scene with the tune.

I love a lot of these selections. Thanks for doing this.

Looks like I may have missed the opportunity to formally nominate Ode to Joy from Beethoven I'm Copying Beethoven.

Recreates the concert experience very well IMO.

Like you I haven't seen it but also liked the opening but paraphrasing Belton Ag who nominated the scene, the rest of the movie sucks.

Yeah a little late but if enough folks go through the trouble of giving your post a blue star, I'll consider having it be part of the main event. So start your "write in" campaign.

Yay!

So seriously, I saw Ode to Joy live in Houston and it was damn near a religious experience. Just stunningly beautiful and powerful in person,

I stumbled across this clip of a movie I've never seen and believe they perfectly recreate my concert experience. Even down to the shaking at the end of the clip as if God was right there with you. This clip is on on my regular playlist because it brings me so much, well... joy.

This contest has made two things abundantly clear

1) I have not seen very many movies.
2) I don't know jack about classical music.

I would argue in favor of including it. The scene is interesting, if fictional. (Sidenote: the performance in the clip seems to use the traditional score with modern instruments. In 1996, Jonathan Del Mar published a re-edited score that is closer to what the 9th really sounded like. John Eliot Gardner conducted a recording using Del Mar's score and time period correct instruments. Worth a listen if you're a fan of the 9th.)

Posting here mostly to add this thread to my watch list so I don't miss any more of these. What criteria are y'all using?

As I was watching these videos over lunch, I decided I generally prefer scenes where the music tells the story (like the Shawshank scene) over ones where the music complements the storytelling (V For Vendetta) over narrative montages (The Sum of All Fears) over montages that are basically just an excuse to play good music (The Social Network).

My musical preferences also influence my decisions; I can't help it, but I can admit it.
