Dan Fogelberg was an extremely gifted musician and songwriter. But his lyrics and production were sometimes maudlin or melodramatic (this song is a good example). He likely would have had more success had he dialed things back a bit. I'm a big fan and his over-the-top production even grates on me at times.

Still, the man had a lot of success. In the '70s and '80s, his music was everywhere. He released 14 studio albums, three live albums and two collaborations with jazz flautist Tim Weisberg. And he had six top 20 singles (and several more on the adult contemporary charts).

I saw him in concert once when he had a bad cold and couldn't hit the high notes on a couple of his songs. So he apologized for not performing them, pulled out a classical guitar and played a flawless instrumental cover of the Beatles' "Blackbird." Very talented.

Not any more. He's dead.

I wasn't familiar with it at first, and was going to stop listening after the first verse, but I stuck it out and actually kind of liked it by the end. Interesting story, too.
