This isn't exactly "new" info, but was looking up something else and found it, thought some might be interested. Some may already know the story.

I think almost everyone loves that song, in part because everyone can relate to it on some level. But it did really happen, and song was almost entirely true. The woman in the song didn't know about it until she heard it on the radio, how crazy would that be?

Never knew that was the title. Its really one of the worst songs ever made. Nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia. Of course its true, though. If it were made up, it would be a better story.

The first time I heard this song I thought it was so cheesy that it was intended to be a joke, until I kept listening and realized it was an actual attempt at a real song. For some reason it's hard to take seriously after the reference to the frozen foods section of a grocery store.

Its like the "hey there, Delilah" of the disco/soft rock/fern bar era.

I love when someone doesn't like something popular and declares it "one of" or "the worst ____ ever made." Happens a lot with popular restaurants and movies. "I tried Whataburger and it is the worst burger in the state of Texas by far."

Bro Country
Auto-tuned pop crap about days of the week, or bubble gum or boos
Formulaic rap

All good.

It is the almost universally liked song by a renowned and accomplished songwriter that is one of the worst. Right.

A 4 decade old song most people have never heard from an obscure artist most people have never heard of.

"worst songs ever written"

Turn on the radio to a pop station. Listen to 3 songs. Fogelberg is no longer in the top half of worst songs you have listened to in the past 10 minutes.

A) yes old story but still a good one
B) I've always loved that song particular because it's so relatable. Especially to those of us who were involved in serious relationships before the internet/social media era. The situation described in the song is so bittersweet particularly because the couple hadn't been cyber stalking each other and knew nothing of what happened to one another.
C) Dan Fogelberg obscure? LOFL. The man was a legit star, very talented, with multiple hit songs. I miss him. **** cancer.

No one expects a passionate Dan Fogelberg debate. Its chief weapon is surprise.

I was a big DF fan back in college, "As the Raven flies" is timeless. Might have to revisit his catalog.

I'm with you. I've heard of Dan Fogelberg, but I've never heard that song before. Just listened to it on YouTube and it was terrible. I'll take Luke Bryan any day over that.

Maybe he's an architect in a loveless marriage.

I'm in my mid 50s and never was a huge fan of Dan Fogelberg, but if you like that sort of music at all, I recommend Captured Angel. It is a pretty good album from start to finish.

They bought a six pack, sipped beer in her car and gabbed away. "We had some laughs," Jill recalls.

As two hours flew by, Jill's family and friends grew worried.

"Gabbed". Mmm hmm.

I've watched this thread with a strange fascination all day. When I started it last night I thought it was an innocuous enough feel good story .

But internet is gonna internet. It's more interesting this way anyway.

Well, at least he kept her 1) warm, 2) safe, and 3) dry. That's gotta be at least a couple of levels of Maslowe's hierarchy of needs.

I'm actually kind of shocked at the amount of people saying they haven't heard this song. It is in the usual rotation every single year during the Christmas music binge from Thanksgiving to New Years. I don't love it, but I don't hate it, either. One or two listens tides me over for the year.

I second this point. Anyone who listens to Christmas music must have heard this song a couple of times a year.

It's far from my favorite Christmas song, but I enjoy hearing it once or twice as the song cycle begins each year.

Tonight is the 1st time in my entire life that I've ever heard this song. If I'm lucky I won't hear it again for another 48 years.

This might not be the "worst song ever", but there are some pretty terrible Christmas songs I would rank ahead of this one, if getting airplay during Christmas classifies it as a Christmas song.

I'm shocked at the amount of people claiming this to be an even relatively popular song.

In all seriousness, the song was a top ten single so it had decent traction, and was big on adult contemporary stations for a while too.
But a few years later Fogelberg put out a greatest hits album which sold something like 3 million copies, and kind of lived on with many folks that way. That was where I found it sometime after.

But clearly a generational gap with that song (and him generally) as this thread shows.

I hope this is the thread that gets bumped when anybody on the entertainment board is feeling nostalgic.

It has the same energy as the "how do I convert my dvd to laserdiscs" thread in the needed forum.

not my favorite song by Fogelberg but its ok. Interesting back story. Always been a fan of his music because my girlfriend in college liked to listen to it while we did the dirty. Always brings back nice memories.
