Growing up, "John Wayne" was the definition to me of "movie star". THE movie star.
Wiki says he was in 169 films. There are dozens that I enjoy. To each his own.
You might have a point about The Quiet Man. It's held in very high regard critically but I've only known one person who truly loved it. He watched it every year for his birthday.
I think the bolder part is the best way to describe him. He wasn't typically a great actor but he had a few good roles. Typically you could copy and paste his character/caricature into a dozen different movies and he would come across as the same person...that's not great acting.
But he was a major movie star. Box office draw, iconic name and memorable persona (the same one in most films, but iconic nonetheless). I don't mind him in most of his roles, I liked him in a few, I loved him in probably half a dozen.
