I contend that the Shootist is his most underrated movie. The cast was stellar if aging and the tension and subjects were moving.

Hard to argue against The Shootist. His other film opposite of Lauren Bacall, Blood Alley, is also not well known and a solid film. I'm not a big fan of most of his WWII films but really enjoyed They Were Expendable.

Yeah before opening the thread the shootist was what I thought of. Perfect allegory for his life, great cast, well shot...hard to not like it.

Island in the Sky

Great aviation/survival movie - not your typical John Wayne flick. It was out of circulation for several decades but is shown on occasion and is available on DVD. Check it out.

I agree with several on here so far. But I will add two.

Donovon's Reef
The Barbarian and the Geisha

Big Jim McClain may also be underrated. Great movie.

It's considered a classic by pretty much everyone. Not sure how it can be considered underrated.

I agree The Shootist is underrated but I personally find it too melancholy to rewatch very often.

My first thought was They Were Expendable. Wayne plays his typical character of the period but the movie subverts him at every turn. Joseph August's cinematography is superb in his use of shadow. And lots of real PT boats in action.

I disagree. When people talk about their favorite John Wayne movies, nobody ever mentions The Quiet Man. If you bring it up, people will say its a really good movie, but anytime John Wayne is brought up, its always the same five or so movies that people talk about, and its always his westerns. IMO, its one of his top three movies, but its usually forgotten because its not a typical John Wayne movie.

They're all overrated.

Now let the gnashing of teeth and name calling start.

The final scene is greatness. The bartender shoots him in the back and Ron Howard shoots the bartender and is immediately disgusted by the whole notion of everything he once celebrated about his now dying/dead hero. Very, very well done with that and the long walk back home.

I really like this film and have it on DVD.

The next year, The High and the Mighty was released. Another flying movie. Big thumbs up for this one.

I thought Hatari was pretty stupid honestly.

Shootist would be on my list but it seems lots of people here feel that way which kind of takes away from the underrated aspect right?

I'm a sucker for Big Jake but the acting job by the two sons traveling with him almost ruins it for me. I hate True Grit for the same reasons...the girl and Glen Campbell's acting are so terrible I can't get it out of my head while the rest of the movie is happening.

I'm not sure if it counts as underrated but I rarely hear it mentioned so I'll go with The Man that Shot Liberty Valance. It's dark, has a twist, he plays almost an anti-hero role rather than his normal western movie, etc.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a highly regarded film, I do believe.

While John Wayne is great in it, Jimmy Stewart is the star (at least from my perspective).

The critics universally give high high marks to The Shootist (JImmy Stewart in that one, too) , The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and of course, The Searchers.

This might be some kind of sacrilege, but am I the only one who doesn't think John Wayne was all that great of an actor? I have not watched an extensive amount of his movies, but from what I've seen, he plays the same stoic archetype in every movie, and the acting feels kinda flat. Maybe I just haven't seen the right ones.

He had a couple of good roles but overall you're correct.

No reason for anyone to be upset. Films, music, art... it is all about personal taste.

Growing up, "John Wayne" was the definition to me of "movie star". THE movie star.

Wiki says he was in 169 films. There are dozens that I enjoy. To each his own.

I think it was on TCM in the last month or so. Wish I had recorded it

Rotten Tomatoes critics score it at 100%.

Edit; Found out I can watch it on the TCM website. I learned that the cinematographer , Gregg Toland did Grapes of Wrath earlier in the year. The next year he did Citizen Cane. He also did The Best Years Of Our Life.

Will have to check it out.

He definitely played his role. He typically played the heroic American archetype that was popular during that time. I enjoy most of his movies I've seen but I grew up with older parents who loved his movies so I am a bit biased

This. Wayne was a truly great movie star. He was also an excellent actor at times (Shootist, Searchers).

You might have a point about The Quiet Man. It's held in very high regard critically but I've only known one person who truly loved it. He watched it every year for his birthday.

In Harm's Way

The Longest Day

I could list many many films. John Wayne was awesome.

To say he was not a good actor is crazy nuts to me.
