Speaking of overrated, Jimmie Vaughan has totally redefined "overrated guitarist". He wins the grand prize!

First, for underrated guys I'd list Elliot Easton (Cars)

and from way out in left field, James Mankey (Concrete Blonde). He plays some interesting stuff.

As for overrated, I don't know. There's lots of guys that bring something good to the table.

Guitarist for 45 years.

Something that always sticks out to me in guitar playing...unique sounds. Eric Clapton (see my posts in the "unpopular opinion" thread) is incredibly gifted and proficient at guitar but I don't feel anything when I hear his music.

Meanwhile, your characterization of Mankey made me immediately want to spend the rest of the afternoon listening to Concrete Blonde, and you'll never see names like James Mankey or Johnny Marr pop up on these types of guitar threads, but I have more of an emotional reaction to either of those guys or Kim Thayil, Tom Morelllo etc. than I ever will to anything Eric Clapton has done or will do.

I hope you post more on this thread.

Also, is this guy considered a guitar player? Or just happens to use a guitar?

I think it's pretty freaking awesome, but wonder if the guitar purists would disagree.
