I know this topic will fire up some people. You also have to state your evidence.

I'll start: B.B. King

Why? 1) For me, plays too slow. Not enough emotion.
This is an interesting take. BB King, arguable the greatest blues guitarist, doesn't play with enough emotion. Hard disagree from me.

I'll buy that. "Emotion" was probably not the word I was looking for.

Jeff Beck. I wouldn't really call him overrated because admittedly he is incredibly talented, I just don't care for his style or tone.

I have to go with Clapton as the most overrated. Again, he's great, but the title is overrated.

For me personally, I think he was def a trailblazer in the mid to late 60s. Rock music wouldn't be what is it without Cream, Blind Faith, Yardbirds & JM & BB. However, when he made a conscious decision to go back to a blues purist route, he became one of the most boring of the greats.

It's interesting too because I have a family member that has been a musician in working bands for almost 3 decades and we've had this conversation before with lots and lots of guitarists, and this seems to be a common opinion among guitarists. They certainly respect him but the term 'boring' has come up many times.

I'm surprised Jack White hasn't been mentioned yet. I love him, but there seems to be a lot of people that think he's not that good.

Why? 1) For me, plays too slow. Not enough emotion. I think the great David Gilmour sometimes plays slow , , but..... 2) Also don't like King's "clean" sound. Every solo I've heard sounds similar. Probably comes from playing the same guitar for most of his life (Lucille). Boring.

My runner up is his protg, Eric Clapton. Some good songs, but nothing "great" outside from Layla (and he got a little help from a really great one there) , and maybe Guitar Weeps (Beatles) .

Not saying either of these guys are terrible, just saying overrated.

GO!
bb is good and the most well known of the 3 kings of the blues, but is definitely my least favorite. i'd rank them freddie, then a close second albert, then a distant third bb

but thats just my opinion

That is my opinion of the 3 kings as well, but I am definitely no guitar aficionado.

So you're saying, that Clapton, who was ranked #2 by Rolling Stone, is right where he should be, at #2?

Hell, Clapton wasn't even the 2nd best guitarist in the Yardbirds!

I'd say Rolling Stone is a ginormous pile of crap. Going by that, Hendrix is overrated. Gimme a break.

Tom is a wizard at getting some crazy sounds out of his gear. A good chunk of it isn't my cup of tea to listen to (i.e. his solos during the Audioslave days), but the dude can play.

First, for underrated guys I'd list Elliot Easton (Cars)

and from way out in left field, James Mankey (Concrete Blonde). He plays some interesting stuff.

As for overrated, I don't know. There's lots of guys that bring something good to the table.

Tom told a funny story about that on some show one time. Back when he was just starting out, his band at the time was playing some frat party on a Thursday night. There were a couple other bands playing too. After watching the other 2 bands, it dawned on him that he was the 3rd best guitarist at a frat house on a random Thursday night. Right then and there, he knew he had to get creative and come up with his own style or he was never gonna make it. That's the day he quit trying to sound like everyone else and started carving his own path.

He's definitely creative. Not saying he isn't good and can't play by any means. But I think he's overrated. Certainly not as influential as the guitar icons.

From a technical playing perspective neither are overrated, but people have different tastes in music.

For me those 80s guitar gunslingers just sound like cheesy guitar wankery. I just can't get into Yngwie and the like.

I would rather hear a less proficient guitarist that plays something that fits into an overall good song.

Technical prowess (speed), musical innovation, tone, individuality.

I can tell Yngwei is highly technical and does things only a few can do. I'll turn his stuff off in a moment - can't stand it. Flip side - I understand OP's opinion on BB King.

I will cut the guy who said Slash tone was bad. The definition of a perfect Les Paul / Marshal sound.

Hendrix defined a new way of playing - music theory behind it was nuts and he was always playing solos and singing at the same time. John Mayer, Frusciante, and even Mike McCready (to a lessor extent) took from his style in a major way (love all of them). SRV took the Hendrix theory and layered in Texas Blues style and tone that is amazing.

Jack White purposefully did less is more with the While Stripes to perfection. Added to it with Raconteurs to be a bit less messy with everything - but still special. Edge is so much the opposite - but his art is layered in his effects. No one really sounds like him after he has been in one of the worlds biggest bands for 40 years. His phrasing is also great though - not like he's just power chords.

Although I used to love the heavy stuff - finding less appreciation there these days. Metal solos kind of sound the same to me now.
