S4 Ep. 15 First Contact - another Prime Directive episode with a species on the verge of warp technology. Riker is captured as an imposter and it unravels the Federations spying on this species which makes it difficult for them to gain trust. In the end they choose not to divulge the existence of other worlds and species and to leave this culture and planet alone.
Isn't this the episode where Lillith from "Cheers" fame tells Riker that if he wants her to keep his secret or let him go, he must have sex with her?

Yep. Part of its greatness. Lanel was her name and she wanted to have sex with an alien - whether she did or not is left ambiguous.

Episode description should just be "Riker has to **** his way out of prison."

Between all of the Star Trek series' there have been a large number of story arcs and plot holes that a creative writer could have a lot of fun with.

I thought of a new Star Trek series I would call "Tapestry".

Each episode would start with some scene from any of the Star Trek shows that left something unanswered, or left out some backstory, or left with something seeming "unfinished".

Then, at the end of that introduction, the image freezes then turns into the appearance of a tapestry. The camera then focuses in on one character or item, zooming in until it focuses on a single thread -- it then goes "through" the tapestry to the backside, then, as initial credits roll, we follow that "thread" winding all through the backside of a tapestry, only to emerge back out the front, then pan out into the opening scene of the new episode that continues that "thread" of the story.

We could find out unanswered questions, such as what ever happened to that empath who joined with the massive organic sentient "spaceship" creature.

We could find out what Wesley and "The Traveler" were up to.

We could find out what the Gorn told his crew after getting his ass kicked by Kirk.

We could find out how Guinan and Picard first met.

For a series finale, we could end up seeing Q weaving that same Tapestry.

The thread leading from "measure of a man" just leads to Captain Luvois crying after watching Star Trek:Picard and the realization that her ruling just led to the servitude of artificial humanoids anyway and even Picard barely cared about it.

Yeah, what the hell was the reason for ditching Dr Crusher and bringing Pulaski in for a season? Terrible move.

Gates McFadden had already committed to doing a play. They wrote her out for that season. She was directing star fleet medical for that year on the show.

Don't remember the whole story, but the woman who played crushed did the year, thought the role was beneath her or something, then wanted to come back after a year (and probably seeing the show start to succeed).

I thought Gates McFadden had other commitments for Season 2. Then Diana Muldaur was disliked so much the cast ( mostly Patrick Stewart) pushed for Gates back.

Dang it too many trekkie nerds to get the answer in on time....

That makes sense. Kinda funny that the character would just leave her kid on the ship though. I guess he annoyed her too.

It was a rocky time on the show..... initially word from the show was that she left to pursue other interests. But the story that came out later was she was surprised by the move and they removed her - she thinks because she had raised concerns several times about the sexist nature of some of the material.

She was right of course and they struggled to make use of and showcase female roles on there properly for a long time - and even later in some cases. Notice, as she has pointed out, in S1 there are never scenes with 2 of the lead women together. Only one woman in some context to the men in the scene. Troi, Crusher and Yar were always and add-on to the men in the scene but only one of them at any time. And the stories were not central to their characters for most of that first season. Denise Crosby left because of the lack of development of her character basically. And Crusher was replaced.

But after Season 2 she was brought back because Pulaski was so disliked. And supposedly Patrick Stewart lobbied for her return. In S3 there were several Crusher centric shows that she says were written for Pulaski but then adapted for Crusher.

Interview here goes into it

I know the show got more mature as time passed in that regard, but may I add the full commander Deana Troi was sexy af.

So at least that led to the scene with Troi and Dr. Crusher working out together. Someone post that. this has also led me to this question. For TNG what is your list of favorite to least favorite characters? For me

Tier 1
Data
Picard
Worf
Barclay

Tier 2
O'Brian
Q
Troi
Riker
Ro Laren

Tier 3
Geordi
Dr. Crusher
Tasha
Guinaan

Tier 4
Lwaxana
Dr. Pulaski
Wesley

Obrien was such an *******. But I always enjoyed his snark. I hated Ro with a passion though. When she and Geordi phased into another dimension I was hoping she would get pushed out of the ship and get left behind.

I'd say mine is pretty different other than the top 2 and I need a 5th level.

Tier 1 = amazing
Data
Picard

Tier 2 = great
Q
Riker
Worf

Tier 3 = very good
Geordi
Dr. Crusher
Deanna Troi
Guinan
Ro Laren

Tier 4 = just ok
Tasha - for S1 but I liked her later guest spots a lot
O'Brien - I like him a lot better on DS9

Tier 5 = meh
Dr. Pulaski
Wesley
Barclay
Lwaxana Troi

I don't think it's ambiguous.

She made the "offer", then she helps him in the next scene.

There was an episode from one of those early seasons where Wesley broke a window playing baseball (yes, baseball) on an alien planet. The punishment for breaking the window was death.

It was, without a doubt, the worst episode of Star Trek ever.

It was also weird how Picard in the early seasons had the worst temper ever when it came to Wesley.
Because Wesley deserved it. They should have killed him off violently.

Maybe they did. I don't remember much about that show anymore other than I hated Wesley.

Oh no... His ending was so much worse, and not in a, "He got what was coming to him," way.

Most of the women-centric episodes weren't that good though. Maybe I just relate to the Picard episodes better, but the Troi episodes and Crusher's ghost lover in particular were a slog.

Even though I didn't like Muldaur all that much, I thought the friction she had with Picard was a lot more believable/interesting than anything Crusher ever did.

The episode where Picard has to relocate those Indians was probably the second-most eye-rolling injection of 19th-20th century American politics into the show*, but it also had the most natural female authority figure. The argument with the blonde Russian admiral where she ordered him to relocate the aliens even though neither of them wanted it was probably the best moment for showing the discipline of Star Fleet and the quality of its people. The whole relationship was good.

Usually when there's a female authority they make sure everybody calls them "sir" way more often and ostentatiously than when the officer in charge is male, which makes it look unnatural.

They didn't show it on screen, but Riker boned that alien to escape.

*First is the episode where Riker bones the LGBT allegory - I mean the gender-neutral alien. Third is the 20th century businessman caricature who wakes up from cryosleep and gets a lecture from Picard about avarice.

It's like they totally forgot that they made the "Mozart of space technology" promise until the very end. There wasn't time to deliver, so they totally changed his personality and life goals with no warning, sent him on a vision quest, and said "well, you can kinda guess that there WILL eventually be a payoff but we're not going to show you.

Not that anyone was clamoring for more Wesley episodes.

Then Wesley shows up in the background of one of the movies, in uniform, as if none of that had happened.

Well it was supposed to be explained but it was cut.

A deleted scene on the collector's-edition DVD features a brief conversation between Wesley and Picard: Wesley, now a lieutenant in operations-division, returned to Starfleet and is a member of Captain Riker's engineering crew on the USS Titan.

The Ferengi were a repeated jab at capitalism.

The 20th century businessman returns in a later episode to help with negotiations with the Ferengi because, being from 20th Century Earth, "He understood them".

Always made me laugh that they had a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of art. music, literature, etc. from the 20th century and prior but rarely that I recall made any references to things created on earth after that (they did reference other civilizations). Even the archaeological obsessions of Picard were not of earth.

It confirmed for me what I believe - that no great art or music etc. or anything really useful has been created after 1980.

I think a lot of us are giving Roddenberry too much credit. He's clearly very racist.

Villains:
Ferengi - greedy Jews
Klingons - violent black people
Romulans - Italians with dumb haircuts

Good guys:
Picard - French name, but really an Englishman.
Data - White android
Riker - White guy
Troi - White (Although with an accent, which Roddenberry probably hated)
Crushers - white
Whoopi - Serving drinks
Geordi - blind

Socialism works when you have unlimited power and replicators.

Real question is if Starfleet had a diversity quota?
