It's on Netflix right now.

Underrated movie.

When it came out, Tom Selleck was still a big star, but everyone knew him as Magnum PI. No one was ready to accept him as a cowboy.

But Selleck does a great job in this movie as does, of course, Allan Rickman as the villain Marsten.

But Laura San Giacamo steals the show as Crazy Cora.

The score is beautiful. The Australian scenery is magnificent.

Would recommend.

One of my favorite "westerns".

Love Allan Rickman's dumbfounded look when Quigley outdraws him with the pistol.

Great show but wasn't his first Western. In 1979 was in The Sacketts, opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, Glenn Ford and Ben Johnson. He followed The Sacketts with The Shadow Riders in 1982 as with Sam Elliott staring.

And now he is the police chief in old lady glasses on blue bloods and the guy scamming seniors with reverse mortgages.

Selleck turned down Indiana Jones because he was stuck on magnum. Ouch. I doubt there would be any sequels with Mr Baseball behind the whip.

I always enjoyed watching Quigley Down Under; and it was one of my dad's favorite westerns. But I hadn't thought of this one in years, so thanks for reminding me of this movie. Gonna have to find it to watch again soon.

To be fair, it might have been the TV contract had him by the balls and wouldn't let him off - now that I think about it, it is probably a big difference to be MJFox shooting family ties in LA during the day and getting permission to shoot teen wolf or BTTF in LA at night, but with Magnum filming in Hawaii, he was probably screwed.

Probably. I've never seen Quigley. Will have to check it out.

Great movie. Really cool to see a Western set in a different place than your standard western United States.

The end of the movie is pretty badass. And I'll watch anything with Alan Rickman.

A great movie starring a Shiloh Sharps .45-110 custom buffalo rifle. Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman also appear.

Fun movie no doubt. Great acting by all involved. It's one of those movies that I always stop on if I come across it. If I recall correctly, the main theme in Quigley borrows from the main theme in The Sons of Katie Elder.

Semi related, but I still want someone to make Last of the Breed or The Walking Drum into a movie, by Louis L'Amour

Yes please on both!

I think The Walking Drum would be best as a 2-3 season set up on Netflix. Last of the Breed would probably need a 6-8 episode season to do it justice as well but it MIGHT be able to fit into a long movie.

In 1983, he made a movie called High Road to China that had some similarities in terms of portraying an action character who goes on an adventure. Not a terrible movie but not in the same ball park as any of the Indiana Jones movies.

Weren't those made for TV movies/miniseries? I miss those. As a kid you'd get a couple of westerns like that every now and then. The occasional Kenny Rogers Gambler movie, and then maybe a Gunsmoke or Bonanza type reunion. And of course that all led up to Lonesome Dove!

I started this tonight but only got about halfway through. I got distracted.

I had to cringe my way through the first 15-20 min or so because the music was freaking terrible and began to wonder if this thread was an elaborate trap set for me by FTA. The music is actually extremely similar to music from Waiting For Guffman (Spinal Tap and Best in Show creators) which is a spoof movie about a western play of all things. I actually wonder if they used the music from Quigley in that movie.

Anyway, once they got to Marstens that horrid ear bleeding music went away (I hope?) so it started getting good. Will finish tomorrow night.

We said watch the movie, not buy the album.
