I recently got on a kick and started rewatching the original trilogy the last couple days.

Is there any reason/backstory on why the original installment was only a trilogy? To this day I don't even really count Crystal Skulls as a Indiana movie. Never seen and never plan to.

Anyways...I noticed in the banquet scene of Temple of Doom the Prime Minister mentions some past events to Indiana about not being allowed back in Honduras and having his hands chopped off of he ever returns to Madagascar.

Thought these would be perfect setups for additional movies. Looking back I think they could've made that franchise into a Bond type franchise with multiple movies even using multiple actors like they do with Bond.

Interesting note: Tom Selleck screen tested for the original role but was locked into his Magnum P.I. by his contract.

You come here to ask why it was only a trilogy, yet also acknowledge the fact that you're willfully choosing to ignore the movie that makes it not a trilogy?

Can you name a good 4th movie from any franchise? That doesn't include reboots.

There was a stigma that a 2nd/3rd/4th films were crappy money grabs. So plenty of stars/directors/writers didn't want to revisit a project for fear it would diminish the impact of the original. The kind of movies that had a 3rd/4th installment were Jaws (1st great, each subsequent sequel worse and worse) Rocky, and the horror flicks (Friday the 13th). Pop culture magazines and TV shows made fun of the terrible sequels, often the 3rd movie was a 3D gimmick.
Even with Indy, it took 3 yrs for that bad ass movie that was constantly on HBO and WTBS to get a sequel and then another 5yrs for the 3rd film, and even that one felt a little "tacked on" at the time it came out (Sean Connery felt like really desperate stunt casting).
Also, until about the early 2000s, the idea of "selling out" was a major thing that no actor or band wanted to be seen as doing. I think around the time Nike bought Beatles music for a shoe commercial it started to shift to where there wasn't really any shame about making vanity projects you love but also making big popcorn movies that would make $$.

It's still the 4th Avengers movie, just like The Dark World is the second Thor movie.

Disagree.

That is like saying that Creed II was the second Creed movie and not the 8th rocky film.

I think the opening scene of Last Crusade was all the backstory that was ever needed for his character.

Well played

What I meant was why weren't there more movies made playing off the original three?

Yeah there was another made that was years later and was by accounts pretty crappy. My point was there seems have to have been an opportunity to make it a larger franchise at the time of the original trilogy release.

This is correct.... Thor is about to have a 4th..... hopefully it's as good as the 3rd!

I honestly believe that casting Sean Connery in the role of Henry Jones Sr is among the best casting choices ever made. His presence in TLC gave the movie everything it needed to not fall into the same-old, same-old that often plagues sequels.

I go with this view as well. I put all MCU movies in the same franchise. And the first Thor was great. Plus the second Thor wasn't bad either and gets a bad rap.

Side note, I can't find Hulk anywhere. I get it was the worst of the MCU but I would love to see it again.

Finally, weren't they planning on rebooting Indiana Jones with Chris Pratt? Or did that get squashed?

It was a great fit. Hard to believe there was only an 11 years age difference between the "Jones Boys" (Connery DOB August 1930, Ford DOB July 1943).

I think it was all just rumors until they tentatively announced Indy 5 with Ford.

I'd love to see Pratt carry it on.

One missed opportunity with the original series was waiting so long on 4. It would have been fun to see Indy over the backdrop of WWII against the Nazis and Japanese.

Agreed. The reference to Indy's time in the war through a couple lines of dialogue in the Crystal Skull just further aggravated the frustrating way they've gone about doing these movies.

Indy 5 should be in the Cold War with Russia as the enemy based on his age.
