Allan Quartermain has been played by a bunch of different actors. Hollywood seems more willing to do this with literary properties. I'm not sure how many starring characters created just for the screen have been recast outside of total reboots.

The Young Indiana Jones TV show explained a lot of backstory. The best episodes showed Indy as a foot soldier in World War I (in the Belgian Army, no less). Each episode was bookended by a 99-year-old Indy telling strangers about his life. Unfortunately, Lucas has re-edited (i. e. mangled) the show in re-releases. The "Old Indy" character no longer appears.
