I got my 8 year old into it a year ago....he freaking loves all of it....including the video games. Never too young to start!
In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

my son, who is 25 now, and started watching them when he was 5....out of the blue, after he got home from work last night sits down beside me on the recliners and says "i kinda wanna watch Star Wars". It was 9:30pm and he asks how long it is I say 2 hours and he says ok let me get some snacks. So we watched it last night for probably the 30th time together.

and my proudest moment of that was.... he said Star Wars (not a New Hope) and I knew what he meant without having to clarify it. I taught that boy well.

I was then digging into a rabbit hole of sorts - why Luke appears to not know Mos Eisley cuz Ben describes it to him on the outskirts saying ""Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy." Glancing at Luke, he added, "We must be cautious."

Struck me as odd this viewing. Luke has explored around Tatooine for sure like Tosch Station and would at least know of Mos Eisley. He seems to know where to go and what is dangerous during the time he is seeking the droids, etc. But according to the novelization apparently Luke was distracted during the trip which was almost 80km and went off path a few times. He kept thinking about his aunt and uncle who were just killed which makes sense. Ben had him stop the speeder on the ridge and was basically saying that more as a reminder to Luke to get him focused. As for why he stopped it was probably to see if he could spot any imperial ships, etc.

The novelization says:

"Mos Eisley Spaceport - the ideal place for us to lose ourselves while we seek passage offplanet. Not a more wretched collection of villainy and disreputable types exists any where on Tatooine. The Empire has been alerted to us, so we must be very cautious, Luke.

Anyway I'm fine with it now - willing to accept that it was just Ben thinking out loud really for the viewers benefit of course but also reminding Luke of the dangers.

Anyway on that rabbit hole I found this really cool map - from Disney and reported as canonical. It shows all of the locations including Ben's Hut, Lars Farm, Tosch Station, Mos Eisley and the crash site of the droids and the paths everyone took. Really cool.

That's cool. I read the novelizations a few years ago because I found a small paperback that had all 3 in it and they are very cool. As most movie novelizations do, they put things in that probably were in the scripts and didn't make it into the movie. So you get extra insight like you shared about Kenobi and Mos Eisley. One that really stuck out for me was in ROTJ when Luke was being tempted by the Emperor to turn to the Dark Side and Vader states Kenobi couldn't have taught him much, he knows about someone else teaching him and taunts him about it by saying "This jedi master, lives he still?" which is obviously a Yoda taunt. I always thought that was cool. The intro paragraph of the first movie from the "Journal of the Whills" describing the history of the SW universe and basically the Prequels was cool too.

Interesting about that Kenobi point.

But, I mean, anyone who's ever gone anywhere with an uncle or grandpa knows they will repeat any dumb tidbit they have on a place. Over. And. Over. Especially if they have a hot take on it like it's the most "wretched hive of scum and villainy."

Any age is good for Star Wars! I believe my two older boys were 7 and 5 or 8 and 6 (can't remember exactly) when I first showed them A New Hope.

I think the more legit dad question for movies is as what age is it good to show your boys Terminator 2?

My son is 4.5 now, turns 5 in July, and watching ANH is a big birthday present for him along with lots of merch, likely...

True it just struck me as a bit odd in context of the story - Luke didn't really react at the comment but did sure seem like a fish out of water in that cantina. So it got me thinking.

Now it's possible he has been there just for like evaporator coils or whatever else you use on a moisture farm and has never set foot inside a cantina. Maybe he always went with his uncle and avoided those places.

The reality is - the line was meant for us viewers of course.

Listen, Luke was obviously home-schooled.

Why he went wild when he got out in the world. Probably why he attacked Kylo.

One of my kids got caught up in the Pokemon comeback. He's still on it, but his allegiance switched a bit to Bakugan. I'll tell you, the transforming / exploding ball characters are pretty cool.

I've got to catch their attention for a few hours and hit them with ANH again or for the first time.

My 4 year old kept saying that word, "Bakugan," and I didn't know what the hell he was talking about. Eventually we figured it out and they're pretty cool toys. Take some work to put some of them back to balls. He doesn't play the card games yet, so we'll see where that goes.

He was Mando for Halloween, so he's still going on a good path.

My oldest started watching when she was 6 or 7; she's 24 now. One of her longtime favorites is Attack of the Clones because of the beast battle at the end. We had it on DVD and she would come home from school and turn it on.

My 8 year old boy had been on this trip of only being darkside characters for halloween. He had been Vader, Kylo, Maul, even Count Dooku. one year he asked to be Ventress.... I told him only good looking cosplay girls get to be her. He also wanted her lightsaber. That doesn't exist in the cheap kids versions.....

My 7yr-old and I started playing the old Battlefront 2 gamethe one from 2005. So he's now interested in watching all the movies. We are going in order of the storyI think thats how Disney+ has them laid out. We've watched I and II so far and he really liked AotC.

It's all Jurassic Park all the time with my kiddo. I think he wishes Owen was his dad, and I can't really blame him.

My main worry about showing my kids any Star Wars stuff before the movies is the big "I AM YOUR FATHER" reveal getting spoiled. Maybe I'm overvaluing it, but does that happen in LEGO Star Wars?
From what I've seen so far, no. Just a lot of subtle Easter eggs to the movies...mostly jokes.

Edit...well, there is one episode of the 'Droid Tales' that covers the plot of Empire and they do give it a way...so steer clear of that.

Though if you think your kids will pay that close of attention to the story line, it sounds like they could handle the movies.
