And your pick is....?

I don't think there is one today. I was primarily laughing at the people listing obscure names that only die hard fans would even recognize.

The second part of my post is my own realtime stream of conciousness realization as I was typing that the concept of a rock star is basically dead. If anyone comes close today it's probably a Kpop singer or something. Otherwise, Rock Stars gave way to hip hop stars 20+ years ago.
Another texags tradition. Someone coming along and acting like they are smarter than everyone else only to post something that someone already said a page earlier.

Agree with the poster regarding the stadium concert point.

If you haven't headlined a stadium show or a crowd over 30,000-50,000, I have a hard time calling you a "rock star". I would tend to forgive older rock stars if they didn't do this. However, if you have been around in the last 40 years and didn't headline such a show, then you don't have the draw that a true rock star should.

When I think of Rockstars I think of living in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars. Hanging out in the coolest bars in the VIP with the movie stars. The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap and they all stay skinny cause they just don't eat.

for the most part, you really can only be a rock star if you are the lead singer or the guitarist.

drummers and bass guitarists can have the attitude and the skillz, but "rock star" really best describes the guitarists and singers since they are the ones that really get to showboat the most.
duff, Nikki sixx, Jeff ament, Steve Harris, Lars, Danny Carrey, Neil peart, etc.

Incorrect assessment of a rockstar.

Anyone want to make the argument that Tommy Lee wasn't a rock star?
Tommy Lee is the exception that proves the rule.

And I say that as a drummer. To me, "rock star" = front man. You can be a REALLY good drummer or bass players, but a "rock star" is the guy out front that has everyone's eyes on him (or her). In that regard, Tommy Lee fits, but very few others do.

Phil Collins is a bit of an anomaly, right? in that sometimes he's the drummer, other times the front man.

I may get crucified for this, but for a time in the early 2000s, you could make an argument for Kid Rock.

I feel like I need a shower after having suggested that.
Weird thing is I don't think he could have existed in 1987, and he gets penalized for coming out post-napster when the big record deals hit a lull.
1998 (Devil without a cause) is post napster?

Rock star is much more than being technically proficient at your instrument. It's an attitude. Style. Typically need to be popular with the ladies as well. It's the guy every guy wants to be and every girl wants to be with. Not sure EVH had those qualities, despite his awesome ability on the guitar.
If those are the qualities, then Jon Bon Jovi fits the bill.

In my mind, a "Rock Star" is the guy who lived the crazy life....flashy, sex, drugs, rock & roll. I LOVE Pearl Jam, but Ed has never been "that" guy.

I understand what you're saying, but maybe that's why he's one of the few from his era alive.

pretty much all of the grunge guys were the antithesis of a rock star. That's not what they wanted, and it showed.

It's like, cocaine was the party rock n roll drug. Heroin was the I'm depressed and want to be alone in my bedroom drug.
grunge 'rock stars' did heroin.

It's ironic you say that as Andy Wood wanted to be the biggest rock star in the world and heroine killed him. And that doesn't take much away from your point either.

Rock stars walk into the posh hotel lobby with studded boots, crazy hair and sunglasses at night and you just say "that makes sense".

If you're laughing at them for being a ****** - they are not rock stars.

Thread about instantly recognizable quintessential rock stars.

Texags lists 2 pages of obscure names most people have never heard before, and a handfup of frontmen from 40 years ago that are probably on Covid lockdown in their nursing homes right now.
You think most people have never heard of Arctic Monkeys? You couldn't go anywhere without hearing Do I wanna Know or R U Mine for a few years. around 2013

They were also HUGE for about 8-10 years prior to that in Europe, and people who like that genre in the US knew as well.

I've heard of Artic Monkeys. I've heard both those songs. But I couldn't put them together. I'm getting better now that my car has who the artist is though.

It really was a mistake for holiday inn to host a birthday party for Keith Moon. But that's how rock stars become legendary.

When you get banned from a national hotel chain plus a city, you are indeed a rock god!!

Quote:

Keith Moon and The Who were subsequently banned from all Holiday Inn's for life and from Flint Michigan after the incident. It was also rumored that Decca Records had to purchase the ruined car from it's rightful owner. He didn't get the nickname "Moon the Loon" for nothing.

Hearing a song while doing your grocery shopping or mall shopping does not make the band members rock stars. The general public kinda has to know what they look like.

Even if you loathe "Van Hagar," I'd say Sammy. Having your name on a bar in Cabo, where you play a sold-out gig on your birthday every year,..smoking hot wife...very recognizable....

I think he checks the boxes.
