It was a real band with non actor musicians just they choose to be represented by animated characters.
They are what is called a "virtual band" not a fictional band.

Tenacious D and The Monkees were bands created with ACTORS for a fictional show. Their first released product was the show.
Gorillaz was a band created by MUSICIANS that first released a musical product (an EP) and then built a virtual world around it in terms of cartoon videos.
So Actors not musicians and a fictional TV product before any musical release.
Technicality maybe but I did consider them.
