what???

Love everything they did in the 80s but the 90s their Pop / Discoteque era was terrible imho. Zooropa wasn't much better.

Came back strong later with How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and No Line on the Horizon but then the last few have fallen flat.

Longevity yes, consistency no.

I'll go less American mainstream with Nightwish. At least the Tarja and Floor eras anyway, wasn't a fan of their second lead singer. But musically they've been solid for 30 years.

No one is more consistent than AC/DC. They've sounded exactly the same for 40 years. And I say that as a compliment.

Gotta be this. I watch their old shows on YouTube and compare it to the shows I have been too. Same stuff. Wish I was older and had been able to see more AC/DC.

While their 80s work is stronger overall, I think Achtung Baby is their best album. It was also their last great one IMO.

Brian Setzer. Whether with The Stray Cats, by himself, or with his orchestra, he's amazing and always fun. Plus he's a genuinely great guy who loves hot rods.

I love U2, but I'd put them on the "favorite but inconsistent" thread.

I don't know how Pearl jam ended up on this thread.. they have changed quite a bit since Ten. If they hadn't, I'd own and love every album front to back!

Type O Negative had a VERY consistent sound, so does Fear Factory.

I saw them Open for Queensryche back in '95 in Odessa, TX. Peter Steele (RIP) was a big dude.

TON is probably in my top 5 of all time. Bloody kisses through Dead Again, seriously not one track I'd skip (aside from the filler stuff), and only band in my top 5 that I can't look forward to picking up latest album on release date. Enjoy the earlier stuff on first album and faux live album, but some of that can drag on a bit even for me.

I feel Peter was hugely underrated as a song writer.

I saw them 5 times, '99 at numbers through 08 at verizon. Sad to know I'll never hear another TON song. Absolutely nothing replaces that band, and I just love how the tones and sounds on the last album sound exactly the same 15 years before. It's like he had his amp set and never touched it again.

Agreed. You can't be on this list if you try something new. Zooropa and Pop just weren't great but All That You Can't Leave Behind was. I wouldn't listen to a lot of their new stuff all that heavily (Songs off Innocence/Experience) but these guys are hitting 60. They shouldn't sound like they are in their 20's.

Are we discussing bands that consistently sound the same over the years, or are we discussing bands that put out the same quality of work over the years?

I took it to mean bands/artists whose quality has remained really high throughout their discography.

The OP mentioned both in his example (Offspring - consistent sound, consistent quality).

So who knows... why not both.

Thought about this long and hard and the best example I can come up with is

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers / Tom Petty

Consistent sound throughout his career - watched this documentary about them and one of the things it went into was that every TP album instantly sounds like an old TP album. The songs were so immediately recognizable and timeless. Any record could have been made in 1978 or 2008 and it would sound the same.

And consistent delivery of quality - certainly from the debut in 1977 through the mid 90s he was on top across all those years but I would argue even the Highway Companion, Last DJ, Mojo and Hypnotic Eye maintained the same level of quality it was just that he was no longer popular with younger generation buying records. Some of my favorite TP songs now are on those later albums and they became concert favorites late.

American Dream Plan B
Something Good Coming - this song is as good as anything he has done imho
I Should Have Known It
Square One
Good Enough
The Last DJ
Room at the Top

You may not know many of those - or any - they don't get much radio airplay but they are in my TP GH rotation.

From "Breakdown" and "American Girl" through "You and Me" and "For Real" on some posthumous collections Tom Petty was Tom Petty.

Robin Trower.

I think one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. The man is in his late 70's, and still putting out new music. Still tours regularly to support the new stuff. Skills are better than ever.

Chicago's longevity is to be admired, and I think the members of the horn section have been constant. But to me, they were never the same after Mr. Kath passed away.

I feel very fortunate for having seen them a handful of times, I don't know if I ever saw them headline, but at various points in the mid to late 90s I got to see them live and had a blast every time. Loved seeing them cram 3 or 4 songs into a 45 minute set and somehow make it all work.

"Base not your joy upon the deeds of others, for what is given can be taken away" has always stuck with me. Bloody Kisses came out when I was a senior in HS and kinda didn't know what tf I was going to do with my life, so TON was my guiding darkness.
