Thing is, ELO formed when Jeff Lynne was 23 and had international hits when he was 27. Tom Petty started getting career traction around 25, Dylan got his first record deal when he was 20. They all had multiple albums in a genre that was essentially never off the air on the radio. Orbison had hits from when he was 24 and all of these other guys looked up to him. They all played dad music when we were listening to Warrant or whatever else was already flaming out when their hits were getting airplay.

For whatever reason, artists rarely have staying power like that any more, at least not in rock music.

Not sure what the point is either. Those ages were correct back in 1988 but what does that have to do with 2021?
Because the guy tweeting was probably a kid then and kids have skewed perception of adults ages that tends to carry forward.

My nephew thinks I'm ancient and I'm 47.

You sure he's the one with the skewed perspective?
Yes, considering the point of the guys tweet.

Born in 66....... the one that got me and this was a while ago was that in the mid to late 70s I used to watch All in the Family and considered Archie Bunker to be like OLD then like 60s in my head at least and maybe 70 late in the run.

I found out later when I was in my 40s (so mid 00s) that Archie Bunker was 46 when All in the Family debuted.

WHAT THE WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!

He looked like my grandpa. This dude was 46!!!!!!!!!

Ha. Probably not in that case. I certainly feel ancient.

I need Larry Fitzgerald to hang on a while longer. I clearly remember watching him dominate when Pitt came to Kyle.

I disagree entirely.. a slew of 90s and 2000s rock bands are still all over radio.

It's just not your dad's rock. It's godsmack, korn, disturbed, linkin park, three days grace, et al., let alone grunge, STP, SP, metallica, pantera, NIN. Unless the singer is dead, they all are putting out music still.

80s is the only rock genre where many of the bands really died hard. You have to go out of your way on a music format to listen to warrant, winger or Cinderella.

I'd wager a third or more of the songs on most rock/alternative stations are Foo Fighters, Nirvana, STP, Pearljam, Green Day, and tons of other 90s/early 2000s grunge and alternative.

Fair enough, I guess my interest peaked at grunge and the stuff that came after seemed to be a big step down in terms of mainstream-ish popularity. If linkin park is making stuff in 10 years, I wouldn't expect that my now 4th grader will run across or recognize them at all. I knew Roy Orbison and ELO in 1997 though.

I guess all of the ones I followed have dead singers/guitarists too, so there's that dynamic too. Pearl Jam is still alive (unintended pun, I'm leaving it), but anything I hear from them after ~2002 sounds like they aren't.

Maybe 80's rock was the big anomaly.

yep, and they are all up due up for their 30th every new month now..

Think about this.. it's been 30 years since grunge exploded. Yet 30 years prior to when grunge exploded, there wasn't yet the beatles, stones, hendrix, beach boys, or dylan on the radio.

It was still only elvis, chuck berry, buddy holly. Rock was fledgling.

I was discussing this with a friend the other day. When I discovered music in early/mid 80s through parents/older brother and then early 90s on my own, I only had roughly 30-35 years of 'rock'/'pop' music to decipher through. Anything older than that was like, big band, swing, or stuff you just never hear anymore unless you're on a very specific streaming station.

Juxtapose that with a kid born recently and turning 10 in say 2025, he has ~75+ years of rock and pop to decipher through, because no music from about 1960 on is ever really going away now. it shifted to popular culture, unlike the music prior to 50s.

In 1991, I was limited to what I could hear on radio, see on mtv, or buy at a record store. Now it's infinite it seems with streaming. And you don't have to dig deep to find artists of 55 years ago.

Seems overwhelming for young kids these days. Where do you start? Elvis, beatles, nirvana, metallica, linkin park, or billie eilish?

That's why a good father puts on classic rock every time he is in the car driving the kids anywhere.... like I did. they are grown now but I imparted a lot on them. Had to offset that housefrau pop crap on Kiss FM that my wife would play. We shared carpooling the kids so they got a heavy dose of both.

Not only was that music on but I would talk to my kids about the bands especially if they had any questions, but also just to say who that was, what year it came out, if it was on some monster album, etc. or if some cover version by a band they knew then i would mention or play the original, etc. I am a huge rock trivia buff too so I would talk about the bands.

Over 15 years or so they got quite ingrained to classic rock. My son pretty much only listens to classic rock or grunge through the mid 90s or so. His favorite artists is Tom Petty with LZ, Bob Seger, Nirvana, GnR and AC/DC being others at the top of his list.

My daughter also absorbed a lot but did not really become a classic rock freak, but she knows it all, she did take to Journey, Heart, Billy Joel and Pat Benatar though and still plays those in her mix of Spotify stuff. She likes new music too but is often playing some of those 80s rock lite classics and also 80s brit synth pop.

This is because Cobain died. If he was a 50 year old playing Smells Like Teen Spirit Saturday night at ACL looking like ACL Rose not many high school kids would be wearing those shirts.

Good point, my kids love Flashlight, Mr. Blue Sky and The Chain from the GotG v2 soundtrack that I downloaded. That would be like me liking something from the mid to late 40's as a kid, which no one even recognized much less asked their dad to play.

I don't know.. in my car it's a lot of metallica, pantera, AIC, SG and some other heavy stuff. No classic rock really.
The 5 year old loves time is running out by muse as well as sweating bullets by megadeth.

I'm torn on whether to just beat that stuff into their brain, or get some more lesser known stuff in front of their ears, since they are less likely to hear that elsewhere. Like some Opeth, old Muse, Devin Townsend, Gojira, etc. You never know what will catch their ear, although right now at 5/6 it's not going to stick. I have another 4-5 years before they likely really latch on to music.

But even back to my whole point, trying to get a young child into what you would call the greats, that's a huge list of artists.

-8 years passed b/t the Chili Peppers' "BloodSugarSexMagic" and "Californication." 1991-1999. But now it's been 22 years since Californication!!

All the other people on MTV were in their 20s and these dude were ancient.

There's a lot that blows your mind when you get old.

If Marty McFly went back to the future from 2021, he'd be going back to 1991.

Stand By Me was made in 1986. It flashed back to 1959. There's more time past from today to 1986 than 1986 to 1959.

The one that always gets me is the Wonder Years. If it was made today it would be set in 2001

Except the reboot is still doing the 60s. This is actually interesting to me and I don't watch network TV. Fred Savage is a producer and director of the pilot at least. So it sounds like he has a lot of input on the direction initially. But it is gonna be known as the black version of course. Can't have been an easy time but the original did not shy away from deeper issues - as long as it is genuine and not preachy I actually think a middle class black family could be a good role model for the nuclear black family.

Something along those lines that I find incredible is that the Beatles broke up before any of them had turned 30. Amazing what they accomplished in such a short time.

And never reunited, despite probably offered sick amounts to do so. Even for a one-off. No R&R Hall of Fame-type band since has had the balls to do that . Well, except for Zeppelin. And they sort of did, with the Plant-Page tour.

Had they disbanded when Cliff died, they would have put out 3 amazing albums, 1 of them regarded the best metal album of all time, all before the ripe aged of about 23.
