This moment hands down one of the most unexpected scares in cinema history. Just completely out of nowhere as the family is talking in broad daylight. There was no telegraphing with the music or camera work

Why spoil the jump scare my dude?

Agreed... we already had a poll on best scary movie and it was obvious how it leaned towards best movie that can be classified as "scary", completely different than the OP's question of scariest movie. Yet we already have mentions of Alien and Silence of the Lambs, not at all relevant to OP's question.

Agreed, that's why I left those off my previous list. The later has a few that aren't technically scary but I just love them all so I want everyone to know about them and hopefully watch them.

A wonderfully scary movie that hasn't been mentioned yet is the Spanish movie REC.

There is an American remake called Quarantine that is fine enough.but the original has a much better (and scarier) ending.

It's obvious you are a horror fan, and I appreciate the effort. But it would take me a lifetime to get through your list of movies. I was looking for maybe a top 5 scariest movies. I could have been more specific I suppose.

If you had to choose 5 or 10 of the ones that are really scary, which would you choose?

Some of the scariest I've seen, and I'm not a horror movie savant:

The Exorcist (haven't seen since I was a kid)
The Ring (damn creepy for a movie about a concept of a video tape)
The Omen
Amityville Horror 2

As you can see, I don't really get creeped out by Jason or Michael Meyers types. I freak out more with the supernatural. I haven't seen any of those movies above since I was young, so they may be more corny today.

Some non-supernatural ones that creep me out:

Children of the Corn
House of 1000 Corpses

I've seen the two bolded. I think I've seen Candyman. I've been thinking of watching The Conjuring. Where would you rank it? I'm seeing Hereditary on a lot of responses, and you are recommending it. Might have to check that one out sooner rather than later.

Let me put it this way. The conjuring is pg13. Hereditary is a hard **** R. James Wan is good and I like all his horror films. They are tight, well acted, and very well paced. The Conjuring is very good. Insidious is good too. Hereditary may be a bit tough to get into, I just really love the movie and the ending is amazing. Ari just goes for it. James Wan is fantastic as well.

Hereditary is very disturbing. Ari Aster (the director) clearly has a screw loose.

Conjuring is a good modern horror movie. It started a franchise for a reason and James Wan is one of the better directors working today.

Got it. My problem is my wife hates horror. So I have limited time. And I've got a 10 year old who likes pre-teen (PG and some PG-13) horror, but she gets scared and wants to sleep with us. She loved A Quiet Place, and we are looking forward to A Quiet Place 2 in the next week. Not to derail, but any recs for scary movies for kids? She's seen Arachnophobia, The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Witches, Gremlins, A Quiet Place, The Others, Poltergeist, and Coraline. We aren't ready for anything too graphic yet. But it's fun watching somewhat scary stuff with her. A lot of stuff on the fringe has sex over-the-top profanity, and I'm just not ready to take her there yet. We haven't even watched Stranger Things yet. Getting close for that and stuff like The Lost Boys.

Oh absolutely. I know it's old but I really loved the legend of ichabod crane by Disney. It's just fun and might be a bit creepy for your kiddo.

I loved Cry Baby Lane, the Are you afraid of the Dark movie back in the 90s.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a bad ass fun one.
Gremlins 2: A new batch is certainly good for kids.
Little Shop of Horrors would be just fine for the kid and they may love the music too.
Nightmare Before Christmas
Beetlejuice
Casper
House with a clock in its walls
The Ring isn't bloody, try that one
1408 would work
The Grudge
The Skeleton Key
Tremors
What Lies Beneath
Rear Window (may be a little slow)
Anaconda
Darkness Falls

Enjoy and please let me know if y'all enjoy the recommendations!

I feel like a few of these are way ahead of stranger things and the lost boys.
I would add Jeepers Creepers to the list if you are going to advance to a few of these.
Tibbers

True, maybe wait on the ring and what lies beneath, but the previous rec of Crawl should be a no unless you want your kid to see several people get ripped apart by a pack of crocs lol

And man do I love jeepers creepers. It's such a good movie.

Skip Don't Look Now. Way overrated. Just watch the original Wicker Man for a much better "something's off" movie.

Best horror of the last 10 years - Hereditary.

Most of Wan's stuff you can't go wrong with. Not terrifying but highly competent... Conjuring 1 and 2, Insidious.

I thought Sinister was very well done, but I also have an Ethan Hawke man-crush.

Suspiria gets all the critical acclaim for Argento, but Deep Red is a better movie IMO.

Somewhat similar to Carpenter. Halloween gets all the (well-deserved) praise, but it is chock full of continuity errors. The Thing is Carpenter's masterpiece. I think the only flaw that entire movie has is the ridiculous computer simulation of the infections.

Don't look now and the wicker man have nothing in common other than they are both classics. Watch them both and make your own determination. I agree about sinister.

Hereditary was the most unsettling movie I've seen in a long time. It's not necessarily "scary" in the classical horror sense, it's just a traumatic psychological beating. One of only a handful of movies I've lost sleep lying in bed thinking about. The only movie for me that's comparable in terms of how unsettling it was was Event Horizon, and I was young (13ish) when I first saw that.

The Babbadook and Sinister are the best "classic" type of horror movie I've seen in recent years. Paranormal Activity (the original one that came out around 2009) holds a special place for me as well. It was really hyped up and I saw it with a packed house of college students on opening night. It's a solid found footage horror movie (bette than Blair Witch IMO) but what made it great was the atmosphere and experience. You could cut the tension with a knife.

A Quiet Place was fantastic, but I really don't consider that a horror movie. It's just a very tense thriller.

They both involve a mystery in a locale foreign to the protagonist with a distinct arthouse vibe. They both involve townspeople that seem to be hiding a secret, acting like nothing is amiss. They both involve elaborate "follow the girl" scenes. They both involve the viewer questioning if something nefarious really is going on or if it's all in the protagonists head. They both have extended erotic scenes.

The biggest difference between the two is Don't Look Now has a final reveal that is absolutely ridiculous and unfulfilling, while Wicker Man has a final reveal that is epic.

Racer X

Jaws
The Shining
1408
Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Shining (Kubrick)
The Blair Witch Project

Both are slow burn, psychologically terrifying. The "not knowing" just keeps building and stayed with me far longer than any jump-scare/slasher "horror" movie.

I know Blair Witch gets a lot of hate but man, that was so well done when it first came out.

Perhaps I need to rewatch it to see how it holds up over time but that movie scared the shi* outta me .

I think Blair Witch gets a lot of hate because people want to dispel the "found footage" aspect of it, even though for the most part 90% of the people going into the film knew it wasn't really found footage.

It was a very well done movie. Didn't necessarily create the genre, but damn sure brought it to popularity.

Most people probably just don't want to rewatch it because like me they are getting old like me and can't deal with a freaking cam movie (I think I've tried rewatching Cloverfield a few times and always give up because it's just not worth my head hurting).

Anyone seen these two?

The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Bone Tomahawk (with Kurt Russell)

They were recommended to me along with The Conjuring.

Also, The Descent is pretty good. Didn't see anyone list that one. I also really like The Haunting of Hill House although it's not a movie but a series.
Both good
