For my life time Good Will Hunting is right up there. My top two are both Robin Williams. Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society.

I just watched Good Will Hunting again recently and wow. Just a great coming of age story with a lot of depth and truth involved. The depth of the characters is just amazing. Williams probably gives the performance of a lifetime.

What is your favorite and why?

Good Will Hunting is a great answer. Interesting topic.

My initial thought to add was both Blade Runner and BR2049. Think they fit the bill for the same reasons as Good Will Hunting.

Then I tried thinking more off the beaten path. I always thought Rear Window was cleverly done. Takes place all in the apartment, surround apartments, and courtyard. In the same vein, 12 Angry Men is intelligent and clever as well using few different sets.

Blade Runner is definitely underrated. Most people do not get the depth of that movie at all.

I would think that The Social Network has to be up there for me.

That, and Moneyball.

Clicked on this thread to say Good Will Hunting. Not because he's super smart, that's just the hook. It's a story about struggling to fit in and finding your own way in life.

What are we calling an intelligent movie? Because Moneyball is about intelligent people, but there's nothing particularly clever about the movie itself.

I always thought the way The Prestige was done was really smart. Just the layers of storytelling, characters, time frames, etc.

A Beautiful Mind probably fits the topic in that I think it's both smartly made and involves an intelligent person.

Good Will Hunting is a good answer.

Explores some awesome themes. Most applicable of which likely being that there is honor in all levels of honest work, but there is no honor in not exploring your potential out of fear or for selfish reasons. Very "bootstrap-y".
Every young adult should watch it.

What are your thoughts on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I like the concept of the movie and love always winning out and the realization that no relationship is perfect.

Maybe not intelligent, but certainly sparked some intelligent conversations...

The first Matrix. Fight Club.

Both of those movies had a lot of people talking when they first came out. Leaving the theater after seeing the Matrix and all the discussion between my friends was just something I'd never experienced from a film before.

Hunt for Red October. Combat tactics and having a nerd prevent WWIII by guessing successfully what Marco Ramius was really doing.

By "intelligent" I assume you mean that the writers were intelligent not that the character in the movie was intelligent? It's easy to make a character intelligent. I assume the answer would be the that blue guy from watchman or Jesus or something.

I'm more impressed when the writing is smart. So not Good Will Hunting or anything like that. I think Inception, Silence of the Lambs, Jackie Brown, 6th Sense, 12 Monkeys, and Fight Club are all good examples of smart scripts.

Are we only talking movies here? Because I am on the 3rd season of Dark and that show is mind-bending in the best way. It's incredible how they can have so many twists and turns, include an intricate family tree dynamic, not to mention deal with time-travel and still tie the plot into a neat and pretty bow.

It's a remarkable piece of story telling that rivals anything I've ever seen, movie or tv.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Blade Runner movies are a great choice, as is The Arrival.

I will also throw in The Man in the High Castle, a 4-season Amazon series as opposed to a cinematic feature film.

I was trying to decide if this movie counted also. One of my absolute favorite movies. I think it's intelligent in the way they put such a complicated idea on screen.

Kind of an anti-Tenet. Tenet is so complicated that it's hard to really process what you're watching as you're watching it. ESOTSM could have been confusing but they way they did it, it wasn't.
