Why do I feel like there was a cultural movement of "artistic" films in the 90s that grungy baristas would claim "you probably wont get the subtext of the film, man"?

Commando, I'm still trying to figure out the physics behind a chubby guy in chain mail going toe to toe with Arnold.
It must just be on another level of understanding

Total Recall for me. Is he Quaid or Hauser? Such a great movie.
I know it's technically a limited series and not a feature film, but whenever dude said "It's not 3 roentgen, it's 15,000." - I expressed more disbelief and shock (visually/verbally) than I did when Ned Stark got his head chopped off. They did a GREAT job of explaining the complex basics of nuclear power where even I, the most average of viewers, felt super smart.double aught said:

The description of how the accident occurred by the two scientists was outstanding. It couldn't have been easy to create dialog to describe such a complicated event in an easily understandable way, while at the same time being dramatic and interesting.
