idiocracy has the most accurate depiction of today and future society so it's pretty smart for being dumb.

"Mind Walk" - The whole movie is basically a survey of existentionalism and physics, with a beautiful backdrop.

I'll go with a couple of Andrew Niccol films:

Truman Show with the tension between free will and the concept of a grand preventer of suffering.

Gattaca with the struggle to overcome human imperfections and the ultimate role of grace

I really liked The Fountain. It's beautiful, and the meditation on mortality and what that means is very good. I liked it better than Pi.

The TV series Dark is probably one of the smartest things I have watched. Very hard to keep up with the first time through. I think even better the second time through.

I also thought that Being John Malkovich was really smart, in that it was just so trippy and original.

It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.

Thank You For Smoking

An amazing film that balances the idea of freedom with things that you may or may not agree with. Watched it randomly years ago and was so happy that I did

By "intelligent" I assume you mean that the writers were intelligent not that the character in the movie was intelligent? It's easy to make a character intelligent. I assume the answer would be the that blue guy from watchman or Jesus or something.

I'm more impressed when the writing is smart. So not Good Will Hunting or anything like that. I think Inception, Silence of the Lambs, Jackie Brown, 6th Sense, 12 Monkeys, and Fight Club are all good examples of smart scripts.

I rewatched Jackie Brown recently, forgot how great that movie is. Also, by the end I think I was in love with Pam Grier too. She is so damn hot in the movie, especially for an older woman.

First movie I thought of was 12 Angry Men. Even after all this time, I still think it is brilliant.

Pretty much anything written by Charlie Kaufman qualifies. Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich were mentioned, but Adaptation is absolutely brilliant, as is Synecdoche, New York.

I've always been a fan of David Lynch for his ability to never give clear answers to mysteries found in his films. He relies instead on the ability for viewers' imagination to fill in meaning and derive whatever notion found inherent in his visuals. For that, I think his films deserve to be on this list. Here are my picks which I think fulfill the requirements found in the original posting.

Lost Highway
Eraserhead
Mullholland Drive
Zombie Jon Snow

Mulholland Drive is easily among the most mind bending movies out there. - I've watched it 2 dozen times probably and been involved in many online discussion groups and an irl friends group that all tried to decipher it. It is fascinating but also there is no clear or right answer really. And Lynch refuses to offer explanation.

The first viewing will make no sense really. It takes a couple of viewings to even figure out half of it.

Based on my love of it my daughter tried watching it on her own - she has a degree in theatre/acting and she was so lost she quit. I told her she needed to watch it with me next time.

I would definitely add the films of Jodorowsky to this list for sure. Holy Mountain is a gorgeous piece of filmmaking that relies solely on symbolism and color to derive its meanings for the viewer. El Topo is an impressive piece of filmmaking as well but I don't think it fits this list. It's just an amazing film.

I would also add Kurosawa's Rashomon to this list as well. The way it tells the story in bits with each new element slowly revealing the entire story is truly incredible.

Why do I feel like there was a cultural movement of "artistic" films in the 90s that grungy baristas would claim "you probably wont get the subtext of the film, man"?
