I know it got its sequel eventually but to me ID not getting a sequel in the immediate few years after its release was one of Hollywood's great mysteries. Crazy that in an industry where they chase the easy money of a blockbuster sequel it didn't those first few years.

Just finished my rewatch, as I like to do most Independence Days. Best speech in a movie, for me.

Also, is he the best movie President? I don't have one I would put over him.

I remember when this movie premiered. It was the only time I can ever think of when a movie premiered at midnight and had continuous showings through the night.

Want to see "Independence Day" at 4:00 in the morning? You could. They didn't even do that with "The Phantom Menace" if I remember.

A few other lines are buzzing as well.

I enjoyed ID4, but greatest is not the word I would use to describe it. Truly a great build up through the initial attack and earth response. But when we get into the freaking computer virus territory ... good Lord. What, do the Aliens run some Windows platform? And while it is a great shot at the end, they straight out ripped off The Right Stuff with Smith/Goldblum walking away from the crashed spaceship in the desert.

The sequel is among the worst movies ever made. If I recall, they even had something set up for a third movie during that sequel, but I'm guessing the sequel killed any notion of a third movie.

And yes, I see your use of the word 'Possibly'.

I was 15 years old when this came out and I cannot emphasize how little I, and so many others in 1996, knew about computers. To the point where I remember thinking the computer virus thing was genius on first viewing.

My biggest boggle with ID4 is at Area 51 when Whitmore suggests that Jeff Goldblum take a look at the alien tech since he cracked the code and goes heavy d*bag sarcasm saying "And we'll see if you're as smart as we all hope you are."

I know they have prior history and once got in a fistfight, but this guy literally just saved the lives of you, your daughter, and every single person on your staff. Did the dressing down that Judd Hirsch gave him on Air Force 1 not sink in?

I watched this a couple of months ago and I don't think it holds up that well. Still like Pullman as President but there are movies in here that blow this away as the all time July 4 blockbuster.
