Yes it is. While this album and a few others of his are not necessarily my thing, I don't begrudge him for exploring different styles but I do wish he'd focus more on the John Mayer trio. They are incredible.
The album has definitely gotten catchier over the week. For better or worse (mostly worse) Why You No Love Me is actually the song I can't get out of my head. There are some great guitar solos sprinkled in this album. And dude, some of these songs are really sad (Sob Rock, duh). Is he STILL singing about Katy Perry?
Dude was nominated for the ice bucket challenge by Jason Becker and dropped this gem. Love how he just improvs over becker's fingerstyle once the song picks up.
Trio is a regular in my car. I lost track of what he was soing solo after Battle Studies, although I did really enjoy several songs on that album. I briefly listened to Born and Raised but never long enough to set the hook.
I remember an interview years ago when asked why he has such different albums, and he said something along the lines of "I think about a genre of music that was a part of my life at some point, and I want to 'own' one of those, so I try to write songs in that vein."
Personally I wish he'd throw out another rock album closer to trio, but I understand if he wants to at least try to avoid repetition.
Finally got my purple swirl vinyl in the mail today and gave it back to back spins.
Initial thoughts are I really liked it. It's not going to go down as one of his greatest albums, but one of the marketing blurbs I saw was "The song of the summer is Mayer's entire album" and I think that's fitting. It's breezy, catchy, mellow and a fun listen.
I usually listen to the lead single and then nothing until the release of an album, so I will echo that knowing 4 of the 10 songs was something I didn't like.
I've only given the album one spin and dug it but I listened to this song at least a hundred times when it came out a few years ago. The video is so great:
It's weird to me that I was not a fan of New Light when it came out, but in the context of the album, I love it.
Anyone going to a concert this tour? I'm a parent of two now so I don't know if any of their grandparents are willing to watch two kids while I enjoy a concert

I was actually just looking at Dallas tickets after I posted that video for next April. Seats in lower bowl and Platinum level at AAC for $200 which I guess can be considered pretty reasonable these days.
I'll be going to that but also will see him twice before that later this year with Dead & Co at The Woodlands and Starplex.
I looked at Houston tickets but didn't pull the trigger yet. Seemed steep. Although last tim eve came through I splurged for nice floor seats and didn't recreate it a bit. Great show.
I have a decent amount in credit at Stub Hub from a pandemic cancelled concert so I might revisit later.
So #1 in album sales, vinyl, AND digital, yet #2 on Billboard? How is that possible? Maybe digital just means digital sales and doesn't count streams and that was the difference?
#1 Digital 'album'. That might not be a big number.
Other albums that aren't selling large numbers of full digital albums might be killing single sales, and so many single sales equal an album sale, both physical and digital formats.
It shouldn't matter but it does, Til the right one comes, Shot in the dark, and Last train home are my favorites of the new ones.
It Shouldn't Matter But It Does, Shot in the Dark, and Guess I Just Feel Like are all A+ songs for me. And the rest range from decent to good. Very listenable all the way through.
