John Mayer is one of my favorite living musicians and his latest studio album just dropped.

In case any of y'all are also fans, maybe don't read any further until you've listened.

If you're feeling a little deja vu as you listen, it may be because we've actually already heard 4/10 of the songs as singles in the past 4 years since his last album.

I'm not a music writer, but I'll do my best to give a first listen reaction. The only songs I felt myself "jamming" to were the ones I'd heard already and "Til the Right One Comes." My god "Why You No Love Me" was so cringe and bad I almost skipped it on first listen, and I ordered the vinyl which sucks because if I spin the album, it'll be too much effort to skip. "Wild Blue" is pretty chill and definitely fits in the 80s vibe. That's all I can think to contribute after one listen. If I show back up on this thread in a day or two with a different opinion, don't shoot. I didn't like Born and Raised when it was released and now it rotates as my favorite album with Continuum. I liked Search for Everything when it was released and find a lot of it good but skippable now.

Personally I think he's a little too into himself. His musical ability and credibility has improved and that's why he seems to be so enamored with the Dead, but his solo stuff has been "meh" for a while.

Waiting for my colorway vinyl to arrive to give a first spin.

I initially hated the 80s marketing but now find it hilarious.

Say what you will but I really like that song. The music video obviously a hilarious parody, but doesn't take away from the enjoyment

It's like Bruce Hornsby, Steve Winwood, Richard Marx and Peter Cetera combined specimens and had a baby with Belinda Carlisle and Debbie Gibson.

I like it.

Same. I like the song, but the video is so self aware, I feel like JM is saying "it's just a prank bro"

I know some think him full of himself or pretentious, and maybe he is at times, but I always love his interviews. I feel like he is someone who genuinely strives to make something with meaning and actually thinks about things from a variety of angles.

Here is a good interview with Zane Lowe where they talk about the image of the album versus the content of the album and the thought process behind it.

Here another example of why I love Mayer. I started collecting vinyl because CDs were going out and I love the physical media. I love the lost art of the album cover, the liner notes, the packaging, etc. This video goes into the length he went to to get the Born And Raised album art. His vision and passion to get it right. I respect that.

This 100%. He absolutely knows that he's being ridiculous. He doesn't care. I don't think he could go on Jimmy Fallon and do a better job at parodying the 80s. I mean, releasing a white dove from his hands lol.

Aside from the interpretive dance in a water puddle, I think my favorite part is the acoustic guitar strumming on a song with zero acoustic guitar. That whole thing was executed phenomenally.

coming from someone who plays guitar and has recorded/produced a few dozen songs, sounds like acoustic is in there to me.

I listened for it while he was strumming and didn't hear it but I'll defer to you. I was just listening on my phone speakers so maybe I didn't have it loud enough.

He's definitely being intentionally funny with a lot of it. And he said in an interview the other day that this entire album is essentially a s***post. Not that he made bad music, but that he's intentionally being a bit ridiculous just for the sake of doing it, while making music he likes.

My only complaint with the album is that it's too sparse. 10 songs, 4 of which aren't even new as the OP mentioned. 4 years between albums and you only put out 10 songs? What happened to the days of 14 songs? I don't know, I know he doesn't owe us anything, but he could certainly give us more you know?

I like the music. It's not my favorite album of his but it's incredibly chill and listenable. I Guess It Just Feels Like is one of his best songs ever, IMO. Other than that one, lots of decent songs that just feel relaxing in a really good way.

The dancing and the dove were nice humorous touches.

I think I heard some auto-tune in there. Weird considering the vocals only have about a two note range.

Wife is a huge John Mayer fan. Fun album yes definitely some ****posting in it. I was really happy that he did such an obvious tribute to Mark Knopfler with Wild Blue.

Ryan Adams did the soft rock homage thing better years ago, but it also fit better with his style. I assume Mayer is still mainly a blues guy at the core?

I couldn't tell you what he is at the core anymore. He can rip a guitar, his solo concerts are very bluesy, he tours with the dead so he does the jamming thing, and his studio stuff has evolved from pop to blues to country/folk to 80s pop.

His dance moves reminded me of Joaquin Phoenix in The Joker.

This has to be a joke or you clearly haven't listened to much beyond Your Body is a Wonderland. Room for Squares, to this day, blows my mind.

So "enamored" with the Dead? They're touring with him as their lead player! They clearly have a lot of respect for him too.

Its ok to have a different opinion on John Mayer on the TA Entertainment Board. I'm just not as big of a fan of him as I used to be.

I respect Mayer is a master guitar player. He's got some great stuff.

That said, this album fell flat with me.

A little thin and poppy for me. I hate to see blues players devolve to this.

If you don't hear a huge presence of blues in the album then I don't know what to tell you. Actually that's a lie... I do know what tell you. Sounds like you don't really understand the genre,

You could throw most of these songs into the Sirius/XM Yatch Rock playlist and they'd fit perfectly.

Was trying to look at Tickets for his show at the Toyota Center. Went on sale at 10:00 and the site is currently under scheduled maintenance. Great timing people!

At this point in the summer, I'm a little tired of my playlists. I needed something new and different. This album hit the bullseye for me. The timing helped.
