I realize the fights were just filmed for the trailer so may not be representative, but if that's what the combat is gonna look like... not great.

Outside of how the characters look I will be shocked if there is much from this trailer that is representative of the final product.

This trailer looks wild and inventive! Definitely a Scott Pilgrim feel to it. I have no familiarity with the source but looks pretty cool.

I must be getting old or something because that trailer looked like a mess to me.
You are it's generational. Younger Gens' use of tik-tok is evident of shorter attention span.

I did like the character interaction between the 3 it seemed to have the characters nailed. mainly Spike and Fey's bickering and Jet being the uncle figure.

Also Spike's fighting style is probably going to be extremely difficult to adapt to live action, hard to be smoother than Bruce Lee in Jeet Kune Do even while acting. Easier in animation.

So it wasn't just me at least.

I recall a few people posting in this thread that they had not seen the original, looks like it just got added to Netflix.

I'm a big fan of the show and that trailer seemed terrible. But maybe we'll be surprised…

That's definitely Ben Mendehlson saying "Spike, I'm coming for you."

Very curious about the portrayal and reaction to Edward.

Still think we don't see Ed until season 2.

I'm still confused about that. Didn't one of the trailers show scenes from the final episode?

The scenes of the fight with Vicious in the church are from their first big fight in like episode 5 or something.

Early impressions starting to hit twitter. A pretty good mixture of reactions so far. This one hit on some concerns I had after watching the trailers though, it looked cheap like a soap opera quality.

Just going to leave this here... what a mess.

Warning: Show spoliers.

Yeah... I'll try a couple more episodes, but this may be a HUGE swing and a miss. It's just WRONG. I can't put my finger on it. There are issues with the lighting/presentation but that's not it. It's like every shot is one beat too long. The fight choreography is sloooow and telegraphed. The pace of everything is wrong.

Doing an adaptation you can be really faithful or put your own spin on it, but this is something in the middle which is like the one thing you CAN'T do. A few of the changes they made seem super questionable and against the spirit of the original, but they're also super faithful to some things that don't seem important.

I didn't think the first episode was bad at all. Are people just expecting to dislike it and reviewing it with that in mind?

I mean... I wouldn't even say it's BAD. It's just... clunky? I just watched the second ep and I feel like it reinforced my earlier thoughts. I feel like the timing of everything is somehow off. And that the fight choreography is slow and sometimes awkward.

I'm comparing this to WoT, which I know the source material well.

I'm disappointed in WoT but still enjoying it (with complaints,) but really liking Cowboy Bebop, knowing nothing about the source material (outside of it being anime some friends liked in college.) It's offbeat and wild, which is my kinda jam.

It's not perfect, but it's fun from a non-purist standpoint.

This show is not as horrible as the Avatar the Last Airbender live action farce, but it's not too far behind. Clunky and slow have been used, and i agree. Too much wrong to go into.

I can see how it might be a fun guilty pleasure or something, but the issue there is the source material is pretty serious even when at its most offbeat.

It's been a bit since I watched the original anime, but I think the Netflix show has been pretty enjoyable. I'm only 4 episodes in, but the Netflix version is putting its own spin on the material. For instance, we're getting a lot more backstory on pretty much all the characters and also having some introduced earlier than others. More so than the anime did imo. Just have to see if it finishes strong.

Out of the casting, I think Mustafa as Jet is spot on.

Yeah he's great. And Faye is good, too. Very quick and snarky. I don't really care for her being introduced in episode 1 or her already being a bounty hunter, but there are more important things to her background we'll see if they capture.

Pretty sure the only person you could ever cast as Spike that is cool enough to play the part is Prince. And he's dead.

The cool Is just not quite there.

Finished tonight. There's some similar beats, but the Netflix version is most definitely its own thing. Probably be back tomorrow to post some more thoughts.

I finished this up last night.

It's pretty good. A lot of the same story lines, but were incorporated well.

There are some very significant differences, though.

I think the tone of the show got better as you advanced through the seasons. More of a Noir feel the further you got.

The anime left a little more to the imagination, I think. You don't have to read between the lines as much on this show. It takes away from the overall mysterious feel, I think, just a bit.

Overall, worth watching, whether you saw the original anime or not. Fans of the anime are likely to enjoy it.

I am hoping for season 2. Any news?

I'm a few eps in and it's fun, I can see where the purists might have some issues but I think they also may romanticize the original series just a bit.

It's spot on to the series in some places and totally does it's own thing in others, but as a whole I feel like it captures the ethos of the original. Visually it has a bit of a Sin City feel to me.

They definitely lean into the backstory way earlier than the original which seems a bit unnecessary, and I didn't love how Faye was introduced but I'll let that all play out a bit to see where they take it.

I am a few episodes in. I enjoy it but the fight scenes are as bad as Iron First.

Just finished this. Fight scenes are clunky, but I'm not sure that can be helped. Spike's gifting style is not something that can easily be adapted to live action. I did like some of the twists towards the end and especially the ending. I hope there's a season 2.
