I should've been more clear, I wasn't disparaging his looks, but questioning his acting ability. His late father was an amazing actor who could - without a word - express any emotion at all on his face. The kid may also be a talented actor but in the trailer it mostly seemed like he lacked the charisma and presence that his father oozed.

James Gandolfini was 38 years old when he began playing the role of Tony.
Michael Gandolfini is 22 years old now. I doubt James had any of that charisma and presence at that age, and with regards to the movie...isn't that going to sort of be part of the point of it? It's a glimpse into a young Tony and some insight into how he came to be as an older man and leader.

a dramatic re-creation of me just now coming to the stunningly obvious realization that "Moltisanti" = "Many Saints" pic.twitter.com/zPiVYkQqR8

THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK is an awkward split between gratuitous fan service & Tony Soprano origin story (Michael Gandolfini poignantly bridges the gap), but it works because of Alessandro Nivola's *incredible* performance as Dickie Moltisanti

THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK gets a little too cute with its frequent SOPRANOS references, but it's also a damn good deconstruction of the mob movie. Here's my review: https://t.co/JfEGojJrhs

'The Many Saints of Newark' can't be what 'The Sopranos' was, but it feels close enough to coming home again. https://t.co/uEGBJ23APT

As a long-time SOPRANOS fan, I’m thrilled to report that MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK both feels like a return to the world we love, and also a fleshed out extension of it.

The performances are extraordinary and some BIG reveals that change the way you look at some SOPRANOS characters. pic.twitter.com/hGQvsZKLAc

I wrote about THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK. A movie I like quite a lot, but it took me a few days after watching it to fully get there. (Like a lot of my favorite episodes of The Sopranos.) Also, Michael Gandolfini is electric as Tony. https://t.co/CSQgEzJTGm

Can almost guarantee that this is their thinking. Do the movie, and if it flops or is only big with the Sopranos diehards, whatever. its just more IP for HBO Max. But if its huge, or the acclaim/crossover appeal is there, you throw a vault of money at Chase and Co. and greenlight the series. Treat it almost like a publicly viewed pilot.TurkeyBaconLeg said:
HBO would be smart if they made "Many Saints" into a series.

Just finished watching. I thought it was good for what it is but you feel shorted when it ends as you want more. Chase should have turned this into a series instead of movie. Missed the boat there in my opinion. If this is a series it's lights out.
