Is there an opposite thread from this one where we can bring up Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers?
Only if you also talk about Peter Cetera for Chicago b

Came for this exact reply. Didn't leave disappointed.MAROON said:
Ringo taking over for Pete Best
This was going to be mine. Gill is a unique bird to be willing to take the back seat he's taking. One of the best guitar players around and he's back there strumming rhythm because the solos are so iconic. I respect the mess out of him for doing this.EclipseAg said:I saw one of the Houston shows on that tour. It was awesome.YouBet said:
But then I saw them in Dallas in March 2020 about a week before everything shut down. Incredible. Couldn't even picture Vince Gill in the band until I saw them live.
Vince is perfect in that role, because he understands what's expected of him and he doesn't have an ego that gets in the way. He clearly sees the opportunity to fill in for Glenn Frey as an honor and not just another gig.
Plus, the Eagles' catalog fits perfectly in his wheelhouse. Both playing and singing.
I've been a VG fan for many years; it's been interesting to see him move from country superstar to elder statesman. He wears the role very well.
One of the best shows I've ever seen live was Vince with the Time Jumpers. Same type of set-up; Vince was just another band member, not the star. But his skill and presence made everything better.
Yeah ... it's gotta be a trip for him to be up there on stage performing with the band. I mean, big paycheck and you get to play Eagles' songs with Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt for a few nights each month?Willy Wonka said:This was going to be mine. Gill is a unique bird to be willing to take the back seat he's taking. Jason Newstead leaving Metallica probably saved the band.
(This is all in Some Kind of Monster)
At the time, James and Lars could not stand being around each other, and James was really close to leaving himself. Jason doing it was a kick in the ass for the band to work their things out.
Rob's been a solid replacement, and it's better than having no Metallica.
I remember seeing him play "Big Bottom" with them on the Arsenio Hall show back in the day.Iowaggie said:
Mick Fleetwood replaced a bunch of drummers for Spinal Tap and did a decent job.
True but... Newstead was on albums that sold 30M records.Quincey P. Morris said:MGS said:

Was looking at their wiki the other day and was shocked that at this point Trujillo has been in Metallica longer than Newstead was.

Way back in 1997, I was seated in the second row from the stage for Metallica at the Frank Erwin Center.
I saw Jason Newstead do one of the coolest things I've ever seen a rocker do. He made sure that the 8 y/o little girl sitting in front of me had hearing protection. Nice guy.
