...or even realized it was for the best.

Was just talking about this with someone today and thought it was an interesting topic. For me, hands down, I hated when David Silvera left Korn and was pretty damn sceptical when Ray Luzier stepped in to replace him on drums. I did not know his body of work and essentially gave him no chance at first. Hot damn, could I have not been more wrong and realized that very quickly. Ray is amazing with his talent and flair and also an extremely humble and genuine dude and that always wins brownie points for me. Huge fan of him now. To the point, I would not want Silvera back in even if the opportunity existed. No hate towards him but Korn has evolved with Ray and I am loving it.

Not so glowing example is Joey Jordison and Jay Weinberg in Slipknot. Hated that it happened and it took me a while to warm to Jay's playing. I don't gloat over him like I do Ray Luzier now but there is no more getting around the fact that he is here to stay with them and does a great job. I am ok with that now. That was pre Joey passing away mindset as well.

Yours?

This has to be Brian Johnson for most people, right?

Or maybe people liked him too quickly when he replaced Bon Scott.

I think most people that post on this board were too young (or not even born yet) to care about this when it happened.

Yeah, I'm pushing 50 and really didn't know about the change.

I do remember laughing about who had the biggest balls of them all.

Neil Peart for John Rutsey

David Gilmour for Syd Barrett

Yes those are both jokes from the OP question. But those may be the two biggest difference makers in band changes ever. With Peart being the biggest ever.

The one I guess I have finally come around on is Vince Gill for Glenn Fry.

Jordan Rudess for Derek Sherinian in Dream Theater. I was one of the few people who loved Falling into Infinity. I wanted them to keep going in that direction. Hard to argue with how things turned out, though.

One that a lot of fans hated but which I foresaw being good was Jack Bates on bass for Pumpkins when it became clear D'Arcy coming back was impossible. She was never a great bass player but almost always played a role in messing up the band's positive vibe. Seeing Jack on stage playing the bass parts well AND having fun while Billy enjoyed rocking out with James and Jimmy was everything.

Nope. Still don't like him.

Jason Newstead leaving Metallica probably saved the band.

(This is all in Some Kind of Monster)
At the time, James and Lars could not stand being around each other, and James was really close to leaving himself. Jason doing it was a kick in the ass for the band to work their things out.

Rob's been a solid replacement, and it's better than having no Metallica.

I sorta had to come around for Hagar, because EVH was still at the top of his game. The songs were too good. What was I going to do, go on a VH "strike" because Roth wasn't in the band?

I wish Patty Smyth would have said yes when they asked her to join before Hagar. That would have been interesting.

I wouldn't say I hated it; I was just really, really perplexed by it. But then I saw them in Dallas in March 2020 about a week before everything shut down. Incredible. Couldn't even picture Vince Gill in the band until I saw them live.

I saw one of the Houston shows on that tour. It was awesome.

Vince is perfect in that role, because he understands what's expected of him and he doesn't have an ego that gets in the way. He clearly sees the opportunity to fill in for Glenn Frey as an honor and not just another gig.

Plus, the Eagles' catalog fits perfectly in his wheelhouse. Both playing and singing.

I've been a VG fan for many years; it's been interesting to see him move from country superstar to elder statesman. He wears the role very well.

One of the best shows I've ever seen live was Vince with the Time Jumpers. Same type of set-up; Vince was just another band member, not the star. But his skill and presence made everything better.

Gill is an undeniably talented musician. But he is such a polar opposite in every way from Frey, right down to the girly singing voice.

David Ruffin or Dennis Edwards
At first no one liked it but warmed up quickly. Ruffin was my favorite but Edwards did grow on me.

Is there an opposite thread from this one where we can bring up Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers?
