I have a friend who is Korean and he said it's very hard to translate Korean into English. The dubbing is always going to be a challenge.

There are all these levels of honorifics in Korean that don't translate. One year older, more than one year older, same age, one year younger, more than one year younger

Male, female, close relative, distant relative.

One level about you at work, more than one, one below, more than one .

The list seems endless.

It certainly seems strange to me that he cares so much about his boss dying. In the US, most people would cheer their boss getting murdered.

I thought Season 2 was great. Very bloody, very violent

So many of my favorite characters end up getting killed, but isn't that the idea?

My advice is play the show in Korean with English subtitles. It loses a lot being verbalized in English. And keep in mind every time a guy says "sir", there's like 24 different Korean words it could be.

To give you a feel for the complexity of Korean honorifics and how we cannot do them justice in English, here are just the immediate family honorifics.

nuna - nunim - Older sister (of a male)
oppa - orabeoni - Older brother (of a female)
eonni - hyeongnim - Older sister (of a female)
dongsaeng - dongsaengbun - Younger sibling
adeul - adeulnim - Son
ddal - ddanim - Daughter

There are whole families of honorifics for extended family - for all the levels of work - for people in your community. They verbs are conjugated differently dependent on the levels the person it's describing is above or below you and how far.

I was stationed in Korea for a year. 13 miles south of the DMZ at Camp Casey.

I love the culture there and never had a bad experience engaging with the locals. Very physically fit population. I remember going on hikes up the ridgelines and old lady's speed walking past me. I made it to the top once with friends and a group of Koreans invited us over to their picnic and gave us soju to drink with them.

Great times. Makes me appreciate the show more and have a little more insight on some of the non translatable things that happen in the show.

Surprised how little buzz this is creating given the success of season 1

Wife and I finished it in two days - a little disappointed they didn't just release it all at once but I get it

I was skeptical they would be able to create a decent storyline that would match the suspense of the first season, given the audience is familiar now with how the game works and everything that goes on, but they did a great job in creating a "2nd" season that matches the 1st

I guess in the end, we're going to find out the games will continue to go on no matter what happens to individuals whether it be players or workers, including the headman?

My theory after finishing the second season:

Gi-Hun figures out who the frontman is and eventually replaces him and the games continue on. The frontman sets up Go-Hun when he asked him "so you're okay sacrificing a few for the greater good?" He will eventually show Go-Hun why the games are necessary and hands control over to him

So based on clues some upcoming games are

Jack and Jill (end credits scene)
Human chess (walls in the bunk room)
Monkey bars or hangman (walls in the bunk room)

I just finished Season 2. I was almost certain it would be a flop, but I really liked it. Probably better than Season 1 for me.

Finished S2 today. Loved it.

The mingle game was very dark and twisted. It was very well done

And agree. Korean with English subtitles.

It feels like this is more just a continuation of season 1, versus an entirely new season. I say that because a lot of shows seem to have a big drop off in the second season after coming out gangbusters in their inaugural season. They have a hard time replicating the magic. But this feels pretty seamless.

Normally I'd have big problems with a "trans" character, but for some reason this one doesn't bother me. It just feels like a person, trying to do the right thing, who happens to be trans. Yeah, the trans storyline is a big part of WHY he's there, but other than embarrassment, he doesn't seem to try to force it on people or even really acknowledge it unless explicitly asked. He's large and definitely doesn't "pass", and he knows he doesn't pass. He's delusional to think he's a woman, yes. But not so delusional as not to realize he doesn't look outwardly feminine at all. A bit understated, really. Unlike the trannies you see everywhere in the US that are so over the top fake.

My only problem with the trans character, and it didn't stop me from really enjoying the show, is that she is there because no one would give her a job. Everyone else is there, more or less, because of some flaw. They are a gambling addict, or lost it because they went all in on crypto, or made a business deal with the wrong people. The trans character, though, is in there because everyone else was mean. I would liked it better if that character had scammed someone to get money. That would make their eventually sacrifice more meaningful, because they are growing as a person.

Before this thread devolves into a trans debate, I have thoughts on S2. I thought it was a little weak:

Most of the season revolved around the game, which felt like a re-tread of S1 with new characters. The overarching plot with 456 didn't get as far as it could have in 7 episodes, which felt slow to me. Also the arc of the cop hunting for the island got a lot of time with little payoff. Maybe this show feels like it could have been 2 seasons, and these 7 episodes could have been ~4.

Sounds like season 3 is coming out in the fall or summer of this year. Just in time for Halloween costumes I bet.

So I'm two episodes in and I have a question:

The girl that was working at the amusement park (pink bunny)….she got tired of the job and wanted to help the little girl that needs a bone marrow transplant (or something similar)? So she "signs up" or volunteers to work in the games? I thought she was getting recruited to be a player when she was in her car and they gave her a card through the window?

Or is the implication that she has worked there before and they tracked her down to tell her to come back to the game and work again?

Yes. One of the head guys had brought her in several years ago. There was the whole ordeal of her not changing but him regarding the whole organ harvesting operation.

I may need to go back and rewatch the first season, as depressing as that sounds. I'm 4 episodes in and I think I remember key things but I have zero recollection of the organ harvesting in season 1 and only vague recollections of the cop infiltrating and being on the island.

Just to confirm:
Player 001 this season was the guy wearing the black mask that shot the cop in season 1 right? So he's infiltrated the game for some reason? I thought I recognized him and then he said 456's name right before the six-legged race and it caught 456 off guard.
