I will add ****ed Up to this list. Great very original band. Probably a little too heavy for a lot of people here but they are NOT afraid to get weird.

ETA - this video is just a screen shot of the album cover and is not bad. the band name is probably why it is age restricted.

oh yeh. Even TON kept that thrashy punk style through almost all their albums on songs here and there.

REM was an interesting mention; good call. I'm pretty sure they were influenced by the Byrds with their rambling, folk style. But Stipe's vocals were totally unique, either without lyrics or so garbled that you had no idea what they were (lyrics were never included in their early albums).

for me - Miles Davis. Certainly his album *****es Brew was a new sound, awesome improv creativity; still sounds unique. He's also credited with inventing/popularizing other styles (e.g. cool jazz, modal jazz).

Steely Dan
Chicago
Chicago - there was a lot of horn/rock prior to Chicago (Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Ides of March, Tower of Power). But Chicago certainly moved it into a less-bluesy direction. Great musicianship, went too mellow towards the end of their run - I've always liked Another Park / Another Sunday

Steely Dan - really nice mix of jazz into their sound. Perfectionists, wanted it to sound JUST right.

I've really enjoyed both these bands over the years.

I'm surprised they haven't been mentioned yet but Korn definitely brought a new sound when they came on the scene.

A few I hadn't seen mentioned or missed if they were. Some of these became so popular it is easy to dismiss that they became popular because they were so unique. Also some later pivoted or just lost their touch.

Back in March 1996, I saw Fear Factory open for the Blaze Bayley fronted Iron Maiden in Houston.

That was the most amazing drumming. It was like a machine gun. I was an instant fan.
