and it's being boycotted by Hollywood so no red carpet, no TV, no host?

Already missing the tradition of wild card weekend capped off by Golden Globes setting the tone for awards season, controversial hosts, drunk guests, occasional hot young actress making a statement

Well it not being widely pushed (or even aired) robbed me from an evening of hate watching something that I was going to complain about the politics of after the fact while still paying for them to entertain me.

It's a little more nuanced than that, but he's not wrong. NBC did refuse to air the awards because of a lack of diversity in the membership. Yes, there were also questions on whether some of the members were really full time journalists, but a lack of diversity, specifically a lack of black members, was the root cause. Whether that should or should not be reason to boycott the ceremony is a matter of opinion, but he's not wrong in the reason.

I lasted half an hour and had to turn it off. I know critics love it, but I don't know a single person in real life who actually enjoyed it/finished it.

It's it though? My understanding is that it is made up of foreign journalists living in California and writing for foreign press. Should they be seeking members of certain ethnicities? IMO that's not much different than filling quotas because you're recruiting and adding members base on race or ethnicity. That in itself is racist.

Bahahaha wait just a second.

The best actress of the year was Nicole Kidman as Lucy Ricardo?!?!?!

Lolololoolol

Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the 5 best directors of the year?

Jennifer Aniston is one of the 5 best TV actresses of the year in The Morning Show, which was a complete ****show?

Lolololol

And I actually watched all these things, which seems to be more than the HFPA did.

I'm not here to f16 the thread after my previous joke but they legit gave best female actress to a transitioned female playing a transitioned female?

It's been a few years but was there any drama around Eddie Redmayne receiving best male actor in a transitioned role?

It's not that they should have been seeking black members, or meeting specific quotas. Even when they finally relented and said "Okay, okay, we'll add 13 black members," no one wanted that because it was a random, meaningless quota. It's that they were actively excluding black people, along with some of the best "black" films/TV from being nominated. All in addition to their usual bullsh*t of bogus, paid-for awards and all the other nonsense.

Is there proof that they were actively doing that though, or did it just happen? Not everyone likes every movie.

They very well could have been doing all this stuff, but it just sounds like the latest edition of we don't like these guys so we are going to accuse them of racism.

I don't really care about the politics of Hollywood or its critics, it's not important enough for me to worry about it in that context but I do think this is indicative of where things are headed. Not many people go to the movies, or watch awards shows about them anymore. It's not so much ironic that no one aired the Golden Globes as it is appropriate, because not many people care anymore, and I say this as someone who loves the movies and I used to enjoy watching The Oscars, and even to a lesser extent the Golden Globes because they weren't taken quite as seriously. What I see from this list illustrates how far apart the audience is growing from the powers that be.

The Power of the Dog is not entertaining, it is well acted, but I didn't enjoy it, nor did it have anything to really say. I don't get the love for it. I'd have no problems with any of the actors getting recognized, but I do take issue with it being recognized as the best film when there are other more deserving options out there. A film can have great acting in it, but the film itself not be very good, which is the problem here. Perhaps the critics were confused by the quality of the acting to think the movie itself was good.

I can't really say anything about the entire best actress category because I've seen none of the films listed.

So much love for West Side Story, I couldn't care less about this film, I'll never see a minute of it.

I am glad anytime Succession gets recognition.

I've never seen Hacks, but Ted Lasso and The Great are terrific shows, anyone here able to justify that pick over Ted Lasso and The Great?

I didn't see The Underground Railroad, but Mare of Easttown was great, I'm happy to see at least Winslet get credit for it. I think it's her best work, possibly ever, she's really impressive in it.

Squid Game winning an acting award over anyone including Culkin and Goldstein, are you serious?

When I see this list there's so much that makes no sense compared to the things that make sense to me. Dune is legitimately the best thing I saw last year, that movie is incredible, and it executed on an insane level of difficulty. It is 10X the film that The Power of the Dog is, I really hope the Academy gives it more of its due than the HFPA did. It's sci-fi so I have little confidence in that hope.

I personally loved Ted Lasso more than Hacks but I also liked Hacks ALOT. I can see it getting the win over Ted Lasso as award shows seem to love movies and shows about the industry. I can see how a bunch of people whose job it is to cover and follow movies and shows preferring a show like Hacks over Ted Lasso.

I think you hit it here for me. Before our current obsession with every single thing has to go through a racial lens you could count on these awards shows to basically represent the cream rising to the top, for the most part. There are some obvious exceptions throughout the past simply because this is a beauty contest at it's heart.

However, going forward you won't be able to count on this as much because racial politics now taint and ruin everything. Couple in Hollywood's obsession with it in only one direction and these awards shows are fairly pointless these days. And the ratings show that.

Having said all of that, I do recall reading some pretty shady crap specifically with the Hollywood Foreign Press that run this event. There are some very legitimate complaints against this org and how it was run from what I recall. I just can't remember the details.

I actually really enjoyed Squid Game, and Player 1 in particular was really good.

But yeah, I completely agree. Especially in THIS season, where Culkin was so good and maybe even the central character of the season. He definitely deserved it.
