Really an epic thread so early into 2020 and two.

I used to be a movie nut, and could always just ignore the left winged politics of the vast majority of the actors. They're largely idiots, drama majors, who are really just extremely gifted sociopaths with narcissistic personality disorder. i think that's what drives a lot of them to want to be stars in the first place. Fake ass hypocrites with good looks.

But these days I just get the vibe that the vast majority of them would absolutely hate me and my beliefs as well as most of my friends and family. They've just gone so extreme in recent years and don't hide their hate. A good example was Robert DeNiro's insane and vulgar rant against Donald Trump. Everything going great, black and latino unemployment at all time lows, America respected/properly feared by the bad guys in the world, no new wars, economy humming along, and these FREAKS would take every opportunity to bash him and anyone who held their nose and voted for him.

I think it was the Trump years that all but killed my love for movies and my ability to just ignore the politics of Hollywood. These are mostly AWFUL AWFUL people. Hate filled sociopathic hypocrites completely out of touch with real America. Why would I give a f-ing dime to people who hate me and people like me?

Part of my frustration is due to the fact that I really do love movies and grew up watching the Oscars, every year. It pisses me off that I can't stand it anymore because of the politics.

Same, used to love it. Could deal with the occasional drunken left winged political preaching by Susan Sarandon or Meryl Streep. I just can't handle that sh** anymore.

Can't even watch SNL in recent years for a similar reason. Comedy infused with actual hatred isn't funny. It completely ruins it.

Exactly. It's the vitriol behind all the humor towards half of the country that I can't stand.

For example, I can't stand Colbert's show because of that kind of... dare I call it "comedy"? However, I thought the Conan bits with Trump calling Obama absolutely hilarious.

Really, our culture is going to destroy everything I once enjoyed, and it will just make me bitter. Same thing with that video posted on the Seinfeld thread with GenZ'ers talking about whether Seinfeld holds up today. Just get over yourselves.

Used to be a time where liberals and conservatives believed in certain core ideas about what America was and just disagreed on various policies to fix problems. We could then all put our disagreements aside and actually enjoy being around each other and having fun.

Now, if you don't believe something or you offend someone's sensibilities, you are an evil person and committed assault.

Remember the early 2000's, when race wasn't a big deal? Now, the most important thing about you, according to the left, is your race; followed by your gender identity and then sexuality.

The Golden Globes were boycotted by Hollywood, tv and viewers.

Additionally we didn't see a single damn movie or tv show nominated.

Way to go Hollywood! You finally did it! You completely ****ed yourself!

Hollywood boycotted a Hollywood thing? What did it do? Praise trump? Force them to wear masks like the help that are serving the food? Pick a fun movie for Best Picture, wait scratch that. Pick things based on merit?

The Daily podcast had a really good episode on this yesterday. The Globes apparently had a well-earned reputation for corruption. CBS dropped the broadcast in the early 80s after it was exposed that the members of the HFPA took bribes to award Pia Zadora. The corruption was an open secret, and then the lack of diversity among members as well as their lack of recognition for films with black ensemble casts or directors was made more well known the last few years.

Can somebody start up a real Texags Golden Globes contest...minus the politics? I'll start and nominate Kelly Reilly. And to avoid this being racist non-golden globes should be allowed as well.

Seriously though - politics has ruined Hollywood. They make it easy to hate everybody involved for any number of legit reasons.

It's honestly not the worst idea to run a Texags 2021 movie/tv awards.

But having run my share of tourneys, it sounds like a lot of work...

Hmm... Already started thinking about how I'd do it, but only if there's interest.

I guess star my post above if you're interested in voting in a potential 2021 Texags Awards thread, and I'll assess if it's worth it.

That would be exhausting.

You would first have to have a huge tourney to get the top 5 in each category. Then you'd have to do another tourney for the winner.

Sounds exhausting enough to be a participant in the voting, let alone the person setting it all up.

Here's what I'd do.

1. Cross check the GG and Critics Choice noms, and grab any 3-4 nominees per category in common.

2. In the remaining spot(s), add a nominee from a popular / widely watched movie that's typically ignored by the awards shows. (Ie. Andrew Garfield for Supporting Actor in NWH)

3. Jump right into the voting.

Admittedly this would interject a bit of my personal bias, but let's be real, there's some movies nobody here has watched and wouldn't get any votes anyway.

The only other thing I came up with was just copying the Critics Choice noms, then having a vote-in round where you vote out your least favorite choice and vote in another nominee, but that would be way too much work.

To be honest, I would rather know what the rest of the board consider to be the best 5 movies of the year. I would be more open to making sure I saw those 5 movies than the ones the GG or Oscars nominates.
Brian Earl Spilner

I feel like that would be less likely to get people voting, since it's more work for them to come up with their own top 5 per category. Many people may not have even seen 5 movies this year.

But I'm open to more suggestions.

I suppose I could do what I first described, but leave a field for adding in their own pick if not one of the 5 nominees.

This was not a year I saw many films, there's a ton I want to see but never got around to, but here's my top 5.

1. Dune
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home
3. A Quiet Place: Part 2
4. No Sudden Move
5. Promising Young Woman

this was actually a 2020 movie. but i didn't see it anywhere till middle of 2021 and i'm pretty sure i watched it this last fall. i only know that because i was thinking "surely Carey Mulligan will get an oscar nomination for this." and then looked and saw she did but lost.

enjoyable movie regardless.

I'm going to start a Favorite TV and Movies from 2021 Thread and maybe that will be a good jumping off point.

Telling them to shut up and come get their award and not use it as a platform for a political statement. So great.

I agree with this idea selfishly because I've seen very few of the nominated movies this year and tend to watch some random stuff that would never get nominated anyway.

Also, people will do it. Look at the top 10 movies thread. It got all kinds of participation.
