Really hard to classify anything from a huge band like LZ or the Beatles in my opinion. Fanatics and historians have picked apart those catalogs from every possible angle. Pink Floyd is odd in that very few of their albums are super accessible or well known by non fans, yet the ones that are known are damn nearly universal. Helps tremendously that AOR in the late 60s into the 70s was very free form and largely on AM which meant fewer people listening. There's an old saying in radio, "niche formats get niche signals" and as rock evolved and became more prolific and less niche it moved over to FM and shorter songs became more valuable.

I personally would consider something from that era a deep cut. For example, I love a lot of Pink Floyd, and Dark Side of the Moon is in my top 10 albums of all time. I love Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Wikipedia shows they have (15) total albums. Of those, I've only actually listened through 5 of them. Now, I have worn out those 5 a lot, but I wouldn't call myself a Pink Floyd super fan. I'm just a fan of many rock bands.

That's why I wouldn't consider anything off of any of those albums to be deep cuts.

I disagree with your point about Animals being disqualified because of where it peaked on the charts. You're basically saying any album that ever reached in the top 3 in the history of music can't have any deep cuts, and that's just wrong. Also, Animals has sold less than 6 million copies compared to 45 million for Dark Side of the Moon, so I wouldn't call it massively popular and that well known.

G has a point the casual classic rock fan who has only heard Floyd on the radio has probably never heard Dogs or Sheep. So to them yeah it's a deep cut. Depends on perspective.

Why do we specifically use the term "deep cut"? Why not just say non-single? Because a deep cut is not just a song that wasn't a single. A deep cut is a song you have to dig into an artist's discography to find. It's not something anyone who has bought an album by that artist knows.

I could pick a non-single off Dookie, but so many people have heard that album, I would hardly call any other song on the record a deep cut.

I own Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You We're Here and The Wall and wouldn't recognize a single song from Animals. I don't think that album is as popular as you think it is. It reached as high as it did because of what it followed, yet overall sales were much, much lower. That likely means it sold a lot up front and then dropped quickly.

Also, album sales don't really mean much. Before streaming, many people bought albums and only listened to the 2-3 songs they hear on the radio while skipping everything else. An album could sell a ton of copies and still have a lot of unknown songs from "fans".

Every single part of it. It was on Thursday. I asked him last night how I can rip from FB live to another medium other than Youtube to share. Anybody know how?

I know a lot of people don't like FB and it's a friend page rather than artist page but I'll post it and see what happens. It's pretty freaking rad. Dude had the vid for a week and was holed up and just pre-recorded a bunch of it (no auto-tune) and then looped it all while improvising the other main parts during the episode.

edit: Doesn't seem to work like that. If interested just send the dude a friend request. He'll accept. Video at the top. Show #74 since April 2020 once he had to shift gears and start doing his own home setup with live events being canceled. Back on the road lately.

Your "Tomorrow Never Knows" post is what prompted me last night to ask how to rip a specific portion of a four hour live show on FB to a different medium. Maybe appropriate for a different/new thread I'll start one day when I figure it out.

Yes! Somehow I didn't know that song either until about a year and a half ago. Had it stuck on repeat for a solid month after and have listened to it at least 100 times since.

Good question, but I'd argue "no" on considering song versions in other languages. Otherwise we could clog this thread with nothing but ABBA.

Found this article about the Stones. List of their top deep cuts. Moonlight Mile came in at #2. #1 is Can't You Hear Me Knocking although I've heard that song before.

Can You Hear Me Knocking does not qualify. If you buy the deluxe and live editions of their 60s and 70s output (I have them all), there are much better choices for deep cut.

My choice would be something of a borderline call, given that Scorsese used it, and they play it live:

That other list got me thinking about U2 Joshua Tree. This song might be my favorite off that album although to me it's not really thought of as one of the big hits from the album like Where The Streets Have No Name or With Or Without You.

Roth especially. He just wasn't a great vocalist live.

Great frontman. Not great live vocalist.

The man he took from, Jim Dandy, was and is a great frontman.

Can't believe Metallica hasn't come up yet. They have performed every song off their first 5 albums live throughout their 40 years, so they have true deep cuts that fans like to hear, yet on the flip side, they've performed some of their older songs so many times, that they hardly are even considered deep cuts anymore.

Look at an album like master of puppets. Only one single released, title track. But a song like battery or welcome home are hardly deep cuts with so much radio and live play. Songs like leper messiah, thing that should not be, damage inc, or disposable heroes however are perfect examples of mind blowing deep cuts, and while still have all been played a few hundred times each live, they are considered rare in the setlist. Then something like Orion, rarely if ever played on radio (even satellite), rarely played live, and so def. a mind blowing deep cut.

Move to the black album. 5 singles, and pretty much all 7 other songs are pretty dang good, and considered deep cuts.

Now compare that to Kill em All. Jump in the fire was released a single, but is not a radio song and rarely played live (only about 25 times since mid 80s), compared to seek and destroy played over a thousand times live and on radio often, but not a single or deep cut for that matter.

"Aphrodisiac Jacket" and "King Contrary Man" off the Cult's Electric album were really good songs that weren't singles.

Also, "Put the Finger on You" from AC/DC's For Those About to Rock album.

The previous poster mentioned Metallica, "Hit the Lights" from Kill 'Em All has one of the most epic guitar outros ever.
