As someone who has read the books, does reading them add to the series? Thinking of buying the second book in the series to get a start on season 2 (assuming season 2 is based on the second book, no guarantee there).
All of the books are quick reads and don't really build on each other. Sometimes a book will go back in time and tell a story from when he was in the army. My biggest complaint is due to the nature of who Reacher is, there really isn't much character development from book to book. Also, they could easily pick just about any of the books to base season 2 on, so there really isn't any guarantee that book 2 of the series will correspond to season 2.

Was ok. Dude got hit with a crowbar in the face and body numerous times but after a nice hot shower, not a scratch. That's how the whole series went for me. Made for TV show with a lot of fake computer generated fire

Cruise nailed the first movie from an investigator standpoint. Just he wasn't Reacher from a physical standpoint.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the books.

But Cruise is more realistic. Almost to a tee, special forces type guys are all short and cocky. Being tall and large is a liability sometimes (like when you're getting shot at).

And I can tell this character is who someone who is short thinks tall people are like. I'm 6'6" and was once in pretty good shape many moons ago... ain't no way you're finding any clothes that fit at a goodwill. Chances are practically zero. Even if you found clothes long enough to fit, they wouldn't even go over your arms and legs.

FWIW Reacher wasn't in special forces. He was an MP.

That said, Lee Child is clearly operating on the assumption that basically none of his readers know what MPs do. To read the books, the MPs are a combo of CID, Green Berets, Delta Force, FBI, CIA, DEA, ICE, Secret Service, and ATF.

Like I said... they're fun books.

Understood, that's why I said that "type". He's fighting special forces guys in both show and movies.

I don't know a former ranger or seal IRL that is taller than 5'9".

I also thought of Big John from Can't Buy Me Love when he puts on war paint before the infamous "stink bomb" scene..."You **** on my house!!!"

don't understand the "coincidence" that Reacher was just in the same small town in GA at the exact same time as his brother? for no reason?!

I can understand him lying to the cop, but he says the same thing to the cute chick wearing the undies.

what's the deal here?

I'm not sold on this Reacher actor. He has the physical characteristics, but so far not seeing the charisma and cocky confidence that Cruise got right.
disagree

he isn't playing it like Cruise- but creating his own unique character.

I really like the job he did. It's actually better acting to create a more three dimensional quirky character

and he is very funny!

This show reminds me how much I enjoy shows where the main characters aren't making idiotic decisions for plot setup. Reacher makes good logical decisions and kicks ass along the way. Love it so far (through episode 5).
when is the last time there was a movie about a strong American male who kicks @ss without hesitation?

best part of this and 1883 is seeing old school American heroes

even Jack Ryan was a bit of a dweeb

Finished it last night. I hope it gets a second season as well. They really nailed some things about the book and the character. Seems like if they give it a little more budget and time it will really hit a stride.

Two things that I specifically liked -

1. They nailed the fighting style for Reacher. He's not a ninja/king fu/fancy fighter. He's skilled but he's a mauler and fights without rules. I thought they did a great job translating what I see in my head when I read his fights.

2. So much of the books are written from his point of view and are his thought process. How he makes the conclusions he makes or why he does certain things. I thought they did an admirable job turning that into dialogue for Reacher. Some of it was a little awkward and made him more verbal than he is in the books but I think it was a necessary choice.

I did not like most of the ancillary characters. I know he's been in a bunch of stuff but the mayor was not good and may as well have been from an SNL skit about Georgia. And KJ was not good as an actor either. That's why I hope they get a bigger budget to up their supporting role options to a better tier of actor. Give the main guy another season and I think he'll come along as well.

Overall fun snow weekend binge and I am glad they made it.

the actor was being interviewed and said he went through seven casting calls and call backs and they looked at 2,000 potential actors for his role

with Michael Rosenbaum he seems like a very cool and chill guy. he actually suffered from Bipolar and mental issues in real life

He went to that small town because of his brother telling him about Blind Blake.

Talking about the timing being a coincidence? It's not a true story.

In the book they were more clear about it.

Shortly before Reacher had left the Army (six months before the events of the book) he got a letter from his brother that mentioned that he'd heard a rumor that Blind Blake -- a musician they both liked as kids -- died in a little town in Georgia called Margrave.

Presumably, Joe was already working the Kliner case and heard about it during the investigation. So the only reason Reacher knew about Blind Blake and Margrave was because Joe found out while he was investigating in Margrave.

Of course the timing is still crazy that the bus he happened to be on was passing through the morning after the murder, but the fact that he was interested in going to Margrave at all wasn't really a coincidence -- Joe's investigation was indirectly the reason.

I wonder if the implication is that Joe was already dropping breadcrumbs for Reacher, knowing it could get hairy in Margrave.

Reacher said exactly this in the show. That it wasn't a coincidence his brother told him about Blind Blake and Margrave.

Had fun with this adaptation. Much better than Tom Cruise.

Violent torture murder of Stephenson and his pregnant wife was purely gratuitous.

Roscoe was cool.

Findlay started out an idiot but turned out to be cool too. " You white people have great rock music…"

All the special forces guys that are 5'9 have little man syndrome and thus learned all the martial arts to kick ass.

Reacher always just overpowered people as a kid, but as an MP he learned to counter all the special forces stuff by using his height and strength advantage.

Definitely one of the best in the series. Not sure if lack of a romantic interest would hurt its chances of being the next one.

Tripwire would be a good one too with a little modification.

End of ep 7 was a bit formulaic and bond or scoobydoo ish (all the bad guys together in a room, don't kill the biggest threat, describe all they did to quickly clean up the plot, and I guess they just knew that he knew they were all involved? etc).
But overall really enjoyed it, looking forward to the next book/season.

Meant to type. First show that I have binged that wasn't a kids show. (I have 5 kids, so tv time for adults is precious)
