Remind me of the diamonds?
In one (or two) of the previous flash forwards Gene has a box of stuff hidden in a closet. One of the items in there is a little tin full of diamonds.

They are in the Band Aid box.

Quote:

3. We saw that band-aid box in the opening minutes very first episode of Better Call Saul. Here, we finally find out what's inside the band-aid box: A bunch of diamonds. That is a nod to the movie, Marathon Man.

Jimmy and his con buddy Marco kept some coins in a band aid box in the ceiling of Jimmy's parent's store, when they were kids. They like to tie everything together on this show.

I was hoping for a 'trash can' moment when it cut to them in the parking garage going in. It's nice to see the little rewards for the fans that have been with the show all along.

I was definitely not expecting Kim to make a clean break like that (without having to run from the law or dying). So simple, yet so effective. Cutting straight to Saul in his mansion really told the story. As mentioned previously, Kim was Jimmy's governor. She kept him from going full conman. Without her, he had nothing meaningful left in his life to keep him from fully embracing the dark side.

I didn't really get into BB until the last season or so. But having watched BCS from the beginning, I've truly enjoyed the character development and storytelling over time. It's easily one of the my favorite shows of all time.

As many have said, this episode was effectively the final episode of BCS. That book is closed. I could see how some may not have been willing to stick with the show those first few seasons. I personally loved it, but it was the slowest of burns. To me there's no more clear example of that than Kim. She was an outstanding lawyer who overcame the roadblocks to start her own practice and still had a heart for helping give people a second chance. Her journey was inspiring to watch...and it all came to an abrupt halt in the last episode. Because of all her 'small' choices finally adding up, she gives it all away. Absolutely heartbreaking. It will be interesting to see how it ends for her in the coming episodes.

I don't know if Jimmy/Saul/Gene gets any redemption in Omaha before the end, but there are so many directions they can go with it. WW saved Jesse, but paid the price in the end. Jesse got away for a fresh start. What will it be for Jimmy?

Also a call back to the dented paper towel dispenser that Walt hit....although that one never got fixed if I remember correctly. He punches it in like S2 and they show it again in S5.

The wine scene was so out of the blue that I figured it must have special significance.

To me, it seemed Gus finally relaxed a bit - raised the blinds, felt safe for the first time in a long time. He then indulged himself with what he has always envisioned himself becoming - rich and cultured.

He goes to the bar to revel in that some and talk wine with his favorite sommelier. He really enjoys it, perhaps feeling happy for the first time in forever.

But the talk of blood and earthiness reminds him he has much work to do to reach his ultimate objective. So a few hours of reveling is all he allows himself before he turns back to the tasks before him.
I think the wine scene might have been one of my favorite Gus scenes of all time. I listened to the behind the scenes podcast with the writers and director and you're not far off but you're missing the romantic interest.

I'm going to spoiler tag this in case some people don't want to know anything from the podcast, but there are no actual spoilers here, just some behind the scenes info on the wine scene.
Notes from the podcast :
- There was romantic interest on both sides
- Peter Gould - "I find it to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes on the show - it's very romantic and beautiful"
- Director - "This episode is very much about endings - with Gus, it's surprising that he goes straight from the encounter with Don Eladio to a whole other part of his life. You see a whole different side of him - openness, weakness. When he gets intimate with someone, it's a ***** in the armor (comments about his relationship with his partner in BB that was killed by the Salamancas). At the end of the scene, he kind of zips it up and seems to throw away the key - to me it's a heartbreaking scene. He will never allow that kind of connection to someone because he's too controlled. It broke my heart from the moment I read the script"
- They filmed this all night. The other actor (Reid Diamond?) was fantastic - due to thunderstorms and lighting issues, Reid was off-camera almost all night, and then finally around 5am in the morning they could turn the lights around and were able to get his shots.
- Host asks - is this the first genuine smile we've seen from Gus? The panel thinks so - Gus is very physically specific, this is the first time he has let his guard down.

I immediately said to my wife: "Gus and Peter are in love" while watching it

Jimmy used to kick the crap out of that trash can by the parking garage elevator (see gif above) to take out his frustrations with HHM. He'd dent it up and then set it back in place. It happens a few times if you watch the early seasons.

Just one of those fun little details that really nails the inside joke when he says "They got a new trash can"

My wife and I said the same but what's really tragic is not only can he not have anyone close to him due to his profession but also, because he's a gay man where that lifestyle is especially shunned in the cartel, he would be almost certainly putting him at extreme risk by establishing a relationship.

Of course it's hard to feel sorry for the head of a murderous drug cartel.

I think the one where he got stuck in a maintenance closet was skipped.

Still wondering what this means. What does Gene do and does it somehow lead to a meeting with Kim? Can this also be what gets him in trouble, if there is trouble for Gene with the law? So many ways this can go...

I can't imagine him killing the cab driver. Maybe he disappears himself. Maybe he turns himself in. It could be that he goes to visit Kim before he takes whatever he decides to say one last goodbye.

You are probably right. That would be wild.

Theres no way they come all this way and not have a spectacularly memorable moment of the timelines merging.

I keep seeing this commercial and I'm so confused. Dying to know what's going on here.

My theory has always been that tomorrow's episode will be set fully in 2008, with the Walt and Jesse appearance (which we know is happening tomorrow), and then the final three episodes will be set in the Gene timeline. But if this is indeed a clip from tomorrow's episode, and not just one of the "4 episodes left," I'm wondering if, over the next four episodes, we'll be cutting back and forth between 2008 and the Gene timeline. I keep going back to the season's poster/key art, with Gene putting on the Saul jacket, so maybe, for whatever reason, Gene channels Saul in some way, shape, or form in Omaha AS we're cutting back and forth to the OG Saul in 2008. Something along those lines. For what purpose, I have no idea, but I can't wait to find out, whatever the answer...

I agree with your theory of the structure of the last four episodes, but it would be crazy for a show this big to do it's last three episodes in black and white.
TCTTS

I think once we fully "catch up" to that timeline, and it becomes our new present, it ultimately changes to color. Remember the opening sequence of the season, with Saul's mansion being emptied? It opened on a shot of black and white ties being dumped into a box that eventually turned to color ties. It was a really cool effect, and felt like it was hinting at something. Maybe it's that the the Gene timeline eventually turns to color as well?
