So, Vince Gilligan knows everyone watching has a soft-spot for Saul (much like making a hero of Walter White), but Vince doesn't want Saul to have a happy ending, but he knows that will piss off lots of fans if he kills him.
So how do you make all the fans hate Saul so Vince can kill him off and have fans cheer, you ask?
Well, Saul indirectly through his actions (negligence) gets Carol Burnett killed!
I guess I never much saw Walter White as a hero. My interpretation of the show is he was the true villain all along. In the end it was just like the words from the song, he got what he deserved.
Jimm/ySaul/Gene is much more complex in terms of hero/antihero/villain.
I agree Jimmy is more complex. While he was always "Slipping Jimmy" (trying to sell or con selfish people out of something) and not the straight-laced "James McGill" he tries to be in the first couple of seasons..."Saul Goodman" also wasn't who he really was either - it was his coping mechanism IMO.
While Walter White wasn't quite a cold-blooded killer, he was as close to a villain as you can get without fully becoming one. He was an egomaniac that in the end only cared about himself and his work. It was subtle at first, making the audience tend to root for him. But it came out more and more as the series went along.
Jimmy still cares for Kim. He still has a heart. He's more anti-hero than villain IMO. And that's why I'll still root for him until the end. Whereas with Walter White, I think he got what he deserved.
