TC, have you heard any rumors in the sewers of Hollywood about another BB universe spinoff in the works?
It can't end with BCS.

I heard on a podcast a few months ago, offhandedly, that apparently Gould/Gilligan haven't completely shut the door on this being the end of the BB/BCS universe. I don't think there are any plans whatsoever as of now, and I certainly haven't heard anything myself, but it sounds like if they do ever have an idea, they're not opposed to potentially returning to/continuing to work in this world.

Speaking of tales to tell, Gus' Chilean story is still a total mystery.
Would require a much younger (different) actor, and one who can grasp Spanish better...but I'd be there for it.

A friend of mine had another potentially cool idea for a spin-off along these lines… Mike as a cop in 1970's Philadelphia. But the same basic thing where you obviously have to cast a different, younger actor.

When Mike was reporting to Saul, he mentions a trustworthy second story man. Saul says he has plenty. Later Mike again mentions the second story man and says he never gave his crew up and only got caught because of the dumb luck of the police driving by at the right moment.

Was this a reference to something that happened later on BB or is it foreshadowing for BCS or nothing?

Also, is it the cab driver who is being yelled at "You're him!" In those preview ads?
Good question, and what is a "second story man"?

Quote:

Walt:
Tell me about these guys.

Mike:
Uh, Mr. ponytail on the sidewalk-- that's Ira. He's the owner.
On the roof is Sandor.
The ladder's Fernando, and down below-- that's Todd.
The pest control operation is legit. I mean, they're licensed, they're bonded, they do as good a job as anyone in town, but they're also top-drawer second-story men.

Walt:
"Second-story"?

Mike:
B&E artists. They're burglars.
Yeah. I mean, hey, they play it smart.
They don't boost anything while they're on the job.
They copy the keys, locate the valuables and alarms, and they sell that information to other crews.
Or, after a decent interval, they'll come back and live for goods themselves.

Walt:
And you know them how?

Saul:
Oh, I've been pulling their chestnuts out of the fire, legally speaking, for five years.

Mike:
Ira and his guys are good.
I mean, they know how to keep their mouths shut.
And if you buy them, they're gonna stay bought.

I've posted this previously, and don't have a link to the article, but Gilligan said if there was a spin off it would be about Kim. Thus, I have hope she is still with us.

Did I miss what happened to the diamonds (or for that matter where the diamonds came from in the first place)? Seems like Saul has more money in those than he can make taking down marks.
I assumed that at some point his wealth was converted to diamonds, whether he did that himself when he was making his money as Saul or if the Vacuum man did that for a cost when he sent him off to Omaha, we don't know. As far as we know, he still has those diamonds, and didn't the conversation with Francesca imply that?

The 5-0 episode with Mike reflecting on his relationship with Mattie and the Philly flashbacks was one of my favorite episodes. That's a top 5 BCS episode for me

***SPOILER****

If they hadn't killed Mike off in BB, he coulda narrated this. That woulda been badass. (But only if Gilligan was involved)

Easy fix. Just show him narrating into a tape recorder, at home alone, while he was still alive. It was simply a hobby of his we never saw, and the tapes are discovered after his death, by his granddaughter, who decides that his story needs to be told.

I've got it. The show is essentially told on two timelines...

But first we start in 2008. Mike's at home, alone, about to speak into a tape recorder. There's some kind of indication it's Breaking Bad-era and maybe Mike sees the writing on the wall. Things are beginning to escalate, he's not long for this world, etc. So he's recording his story for his granddaughter, essentially telling her that, "One of these days, after I'm gone, you're going to hear some very bad things about me. I just want you to know I wasn't always this way..." and that's when the show splits into the two timelines...

1) 1970s Philadelphia. Mike's story as a cop. Maybe 25% of the show.

2) Present day (as in 2023/24-ish), wherever Mike's granddaughter now lives. And SHE'S now in her 20s, and is ALSO now in law enforcement herself, following in her dad's and grandad's footsteps. Tough as nails, just like her granddad, and is tempted to "turn" just like him - surrounded by corrupt cops, an enticing underworld, etc - but because she's armed with Mike's hindsight, she ultimately chooses good, though it's a constant struggle. Maybe 75% of the show.

Coincidentally we watched it on Sunday. My wife has never seen BB so we have been going through it. I haven't watched it in years so it's been good for me since there are so many things I've forgotten. But just happened to hit that episode just right so it was fresh for last nights BCS.

They could have cut out the Kaylee storyline entirely.

Have Mike's motivation be something else.

How much time they spend on Kaylee.

Kaylee and Kaylees mom are the most dead beat characters in the story, and they add nothing to the story.

There was no point to anything they did, or was there?

They add to Mike's character and motivations.

The scene where he talks about his son is a tv all timer.

You need to go back and watch "5-0". I think it's in season 2.

This explains why Mike does everything he does for Kaylee and Mattie's widow.

So, Vince Gilligan knows everyone watching has a soft-spot for Saul (much like making a hero of Walter White), but Vince doesn't want Saul to have a happy ending, but he knows that will piss off lots of fans if he kills him.
So how do you make all the fans hate Saul so Vince can kill him off and have fans cheer, you ask?

Well, Saul indirectly through his actions (negligence) gets Carol Burnett killed!

This is actually where my brain has been going. I can't imagine the scene where she saw them going into the garage in the middle of the night being a total throw away scene. She's going to confront them, talk out of turn to someone, instigate something that's going to cause some dust-up. Either Gene is going to butt heads with her or her son is going to and some unforeseen accident or problem arises because of it.

One detail I just thought about.

When Mike talked to Kim at the restaurant, she recognized him as the parking lot attendant. Later when walking out o Saul, she identified him by name. Not just Mike but Mike Ehrmantraut. In my mind, to know that she had to have looked him up.

Along the same lines having been given his address, she could have figured out who Gus was and deduced that he was the local drug kingpin. Any importance of this to the remaining story, I do not know. Just speculating.

I guess I never much saw Walter White as a hero. My interpretation of the show is he was the true villain all along. In the end it was just like the words from the song, he got what he deserved.

Jimm/ySaul/Gene is much more complex in terms of hero/antihero/villain.

I pulled for Walter all the way through and wanted him to live. Always thought Jesse held him back.
