Pearl Jam - Black

If plaid flannel was a sound, that would be it.

I played this song on my phone reading the thread last night and then when I hopped in my car this morning it fired back up. I decided to listen to Ten from the beginning on my drive to work (didn't make it through thr last 8 minutes of Release). A lot of the album is too "pretty" to be a perfect Grunge song. But it's just such a fantastic album in the way it builds and drops off and such. Deep and Garden are maybe "grungier" than some of the bigger songs on the front half of the album.

I think I might start working my way through some of the classic grunge albums from my youth.

This is a solid dark horse candidate.

One of my favorite songs the vocals are elite from both Chris and Eddie. My pick is another Soundgarden song that wasn't released until much later but is the perfect example of peak grunge sound.

It may be cliche, but Smells Like Teen Spirit. If I was going to pick my favorite, it'd be Yellow Ledbetter.

I love Yellow Ledbetter and that is one of the songs I think of when I think of grunge. Eddie Vedder made it hard as possible to understand the lyrics in that one.

"Yellow Ledbetter" is Mike McCready doing his best Jimi Hendrix impersonation. That song sounds like it could have been lifted off of Electric Ladyland or Axis: Bold as Love. Doesn't sound like grunge to me.
He gives some credit to Jimi, but he was doing a SRV impression when SRV was channeling Jimi. Heard the other day that Yellow Ledbetter was never released as a single because the guitar parts had too much similarity to Black.
