It may be cliche, but Smells Like Teen Spirit. If I was going to pick my favorite, it'd be Yellow Ledbetter.

I love Yellow Ledbetter and that is one of the songs I think of when I think of grunge. Eddie Vedder made it hard as possible to understand the lyrics in that one.

This will help you follow along.

Nirvana is an obvious answer, and you'd get no argument from me. But, AIC is awesome. They were supposed to be at the Southpark Meadows Metallica concert in 1994, but backed out at the last minute because Lane Staley "broke his foot".

Candlebox replaced them. I was not impressed. To tour day, my biggest concert miss.

You should have caught them when they came through in 1992 with ozzy Osbourne and Blind Melon! I recall Layne doing the concert in a wheelchair (he must have been prone to injury back then). It was a great show!

Black Hole Sun would be my pick. Checks all of the grunge criteria and sounds more like a lot of the bands that would take that baton and run with it. As iconic as Nirvana was, vocally not a lot of other bands took Kurt's approach.

Its probably my favorite Pearl Jam song, but I don't think Yellow Ledbetter is really grunge. Its much more of a blues song, like something Stevie Ray Vaughan would have written.

One song is tough. AIC, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana are all great choices, but I agree with OP on Soundgarden, though my song would be different. Grunge was heavy, angst-ridden, somewhat depressing, almost a scream for help with the music used as a search to find meaning in life.

And though the music was heavy and dark, and may have been borne from depression and angst, listening to the songs tended to be cathartic for me, sometimes lifting me out of depression.

This song hits every grunge button with a sledge hammer.

That was almost my choice. That's my favorite Soundgarden song and probably favorite grunge song.

In my opinion you could really pick any of the first 4 songs off Badmotorfinger as good examples of grunge.

Badmotorfinger definitely got me into grunge. Between that and AIC's "Facelift" it was a wide open door opening to mosh through from my teenage metal years.

I've been thinking about this all day, and while my original answer was Smells Like Teen Spirit, the one song that I keep going back to is Nutshell. Many songs are dark and showcase the loneliness and despair that grunge often tries to portray, but with Nutshell, it's not just the lyrics, you can feel it in Staley's voice and in the music.
Would you say Nutshell encapsulates grunge in a nutshell?

I agree with "Hunger Strike"

As a card carrying member of Gen X and front row witness to the birth, short life, and death of grunge, I'd put "Say Hello 2 Heaven" way above "Hunger Strike" as TOTD's best representation of the genre (and also call it "Exhibit A" of Cornell's once in a generation voice.

"Outshined" was probably the first song that popped into my head when I read the thread title. One i haven't seen mentioned that is on the Mount Rushmore of grunge songs is AIC's "Man In The Box".

Agreed about Chris Cornell although I'd still call Slaves and Bulldozers his exhibit A.

Who had better voice:
Chris Cornell or Layne Staley?

I'd give it to Cornell but damn Layne could sing like a mofo as well!

Smells Like Teen Spirit is not my favorite Nirvana song and Nirvana is not my favorite "grunge" band. I'd rather listen to Soundgarden or AiC.

but Smells Like Teen Spirit sure seems like the clear answer to the question posed.

Touch Me I'm Sick would actually be my pick, though the Black suggestion earlier is a dam good one as well.

Also, Sonic Youth is not grunge, though they were a big influence on a lot of those bands.

Dirty was released in 1992 and songs from that album "encapsulate grunge" just as much as the other grunge songs.

They were not a grunge band, but they had grunge songs. Very similar to Smashing Pumpkins whom were also not a grunge band.

I'd probably put Smashing Pumpkins in the grunge category. A lot of people do. Kind of a fuzzy line as to what defines grunge vs 90's alternative.

Their first two albums had a lot of grunge, but Mellon Collie went almost completely away from grunge.

They definitely started as a grunge band. Gish and Siamese Dream are both solid grunge albums. Big change in sound with MCIS that skews what people remember of the early albums.

They may have been the first of the Seattle bands to land a big deal (before Nirvana).

Facelift was Columbia and started recording in dec 89. Pretty much same timeline as Apple. Facelift was the first gold grunge record.

Most people who like grunge know the story of wood/cornell/PJ, etc.

Smashing Pumpkins - Drown was the song that popped into my head.
