When you've been a metalhead for 30+ years, this list becomes quite long.

I'm a big head case. Peak machine head to me is Through the ashes and blackening… just great albums.

New stuff has me intrigued but Rob Flynn needs to not piss everyone off in this iteration.

I could list hundreds of metal songs that I like from the early 70's (even earlier if you consider Steppenwolf to be metal) to the present. I can say the core of that list would be on regular rotation on Ozzy's Boneyard (Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Accept, Dio, Doro/Warlock, etc.). My high school days covered the release dates for British Steel, Back In Black, Heaven and Hell, Number of the Beast, For Those About to Rock, and Screaming for Vengeance.

However, I like a lot of metal that would not be on that channel, like Mushroomhead, Rammstein, Drowning Pool, Brand New Sin. I will probably get criticized for this, but I like some Five Finger Death Punch and Avenged Sevenfold. I love Clutch. I love a band from Greece called Planet of Zeus.

For this thread, I'll highlight what I consider to be the best hidden gem of the 90's - the concept album "Astronomica" by Crimson Glory. Here are a couple songs from that album highlighting Wade Black's old school wailing skills:

You can decide for yourself if you think this is "metal" or just hard rock. They're like the Greek brothers of Clutch:

If they would remaster And Justice For All, I would pick it over Master of Puppets

do you mean remixed? they'll never do that.. you can get it on youtube though.. and jason for all or something like that.
Or if you mean guitar tone.. there are examples of AJFA songs recorded in various other styles of metallica albums on youtube as well.

Yes, remixed to add some of the bass guitar frequencies that are not overlapping with the lead/rhythm guitar back into the mix. Blackened is one of my favorite Metallica songs, just could be better remixed as shown by those youtube videos.

Iron Maiden is just amazing, they are getting better with age and you could have said that 20 years ago. The new album Senjutsu is f'ing incredible.

They still put on a h*** of a show that would put most bands 1/2 or 1/3 their age to shame.

By far my favorite band of all time of any genre and I don't really like a whole lot of metal bands.

Master of Puppets. Whole album. Start to finish.
You have a argument.

If I'm picking a whole album I would say Slayer "Reign in Blood" barely beats it. It's closer to 1A 1B

It's less then 30 minutes and I had the cassette and both sides were the same. I would listen it it and as soon as Raining Blood was done I would flip it and start it over.
meh.

Reign has no dynamics. It's 100% the whole time. The solos are mostly noise and unforgettable.

Intro to battery, then into battery, then MOP with its middle section, then the slow dirge of thingy, then a breather on welcome home, then an 8 min thrasher, then the weakest song yet still better than most metal, then the instrumental, then the trippy Cliff intro and thrasher ending?
Timeless melodies and solos.

MOP just can't be touched.
I agree! "Reign in Blood" = All killer, No filler. No ****ing middle section or breather. I'll listen to Master of Puppets if I want one of those things.

Adding Anthrax's "Among The Living" along with "MoP" for 1A 1B 1C.
See, I love an all killer no filler in your face thrash (or otherwise) song.. but a whole album? It's get way too monotonous and one dimensional.

I know, I was just being a little difficult. Obviously, "Reign in Blood" can't match "Master of Puppets" overall. Mop is just world changing. Everything changed with metal when it was released and you can't say the same with Slayer.

The whole argument: Is the best really your favorite?

Green Day: (Just for arguments sake, I know they are polarizing and alot of people can't stand them)

Their best work by far and I love it is "American Idiot" But my favorite will always be "Dookie"

Metal. The best is arguably "Mop" which I love. But my favorite will always be "Reign in blood"

Not in my case either. My favorite is still black album.. When that came out is when I discovered them as a very impressionable 11 year old.

The last Maiden show I went to was probably 7 or 8 years ago in Sydney. They were great. That was when Bruce Dickinson was flying Ed Force 1.

Timely for this thread, this morning one of my friends had his FB story with some pictures of him and a gray headed guy I didn't recognize. The audio was a dead giveaway as soon as I heard the Air Raid Siren singing.

Looks like Bruce Dickinson is working on a new solo record.

That one's great, but probably the hardest I ever laughed was when they reviewed Katy Perry's "Firework".

Absolutely it does. One of the 2 alphas not just metal, but all music. Ever.

Therion's Seven Secrets of the Sphinx

Nightwish's Shudder before the Beautiful

Rammstein's Asche zu Asche

Any of these would make a much better entrance tune at Kyle Field. Not even close.

Apologies in advance for the long post but I was thinking about this post on my morning jog so had to share my old man thoughts (almost 50).

I'm more of a hard rock fan than metal I would say. Metal that I enjoy is non-screaming melodic metal. Modern metal rapidly devolved into scream-o metal and thrash and death metal all of which I find as enjoyable as pop country, gangster rap, k-pop, and anything with autotune. So that is where I am coming from on my list.

Iron Maiden (along with Rush and Van Halen) is pretty much my all time favorite band. So nearly everything from them I just love as long as Bruce is singing. I'm not gonna bother to list all their amazing songs aside from my all time favorite song period.

I specifically linked the live version as I think it is much better than the studio version due to the up tempo and crowd involvement.

As a bonus, this is an amazing break-down of the vocals and music of Maiden by a music expert. I'm such a Maiden dork this still makes me tear up even though I've watched it a few times.

Of the stuff that I love that is most "metal" I offer these old tunes:

That is just a quick sample of the crap I love.

For modern metal/hard rock here are some great new songs that get damn near zero exposure. I feel so badly for current rock bands as they get no support from media but they are incredibly good.

I'm sure some of my stuff is more hard rock vs metal and that is a valid discussion. Anyway hope you like my meandering long post!

Holy crap!

A Tygers of Pan Tang reference!

We went to Ciudad Acuna in the 80's and my older brother went into a music store there and bought Number of the Beast, a Tygers album, and an album by a band named Icon (they were not great). He spent about $9 combined.

I didn't know anybody else new Tygers of Pan Tang!

Oddly enough I was never a Tygers fan in my youth despite loving Elric by Moorcoch(mispelled for filter) Their music turned up on an Eclipse spotify playlist recently and I kind of rediscovered their new and old stuff which is all pretty outstanding!

I've seen Maiden likely 7 times or more, pretty close to Sammy Hagar (with and without VH) and Tesla for my top live bands as far as number of shows. I last saw them at Legacy of the Beast in the Woodlands and they were still simply amazing with high energy and just a great show overall. Despite Bruce's battle with cancer he is still an excellent front man and vocalist.

I fell down the rabbit hole of watching charismatic voice and was reflecting on how amazing my recent trip & first live show with The Scorpions was and how they are just a great metal band in general.

This is the youtube review of their new song, which I love and if you have some time to burn.

any metallica fan probably has heard of them. Lars throws their name out all the time when asked about stuff he was into growing up…. Or any other discussion about nwobhm, they typically come up. Metallica just never covered them like they did diamondhead so much, so not as much exposure to direct songs.

There is a ton of modern metal with clean/cleanish vocals, with the music spanning the spectrum of speed and technicality
Ghost
Devin townsend
Vola
A lot of opeth
Leprous
Astronoid
Mastodon
Volbeat
Avenged sevenfold
The entire genre of symphonic metal or power metal

I mean the list goes on I haven't even touched the surface.
