Smart idea going the podcast route. Probably not that terribly cost extensive from an investment in getting the potential show off the ground

Oh great another attempt from a Left Coast media exec to profit off using an isolated incident by a lone wolf to cast the entire nobel profession in a bad light.

I am hoping this will be as big of a pile as anything done by David Simon.

Yeah, its definitely done the job we needed it to do. Made it as high as the number 12 podcast in the country at one point. Got some really cool things cooking on the TV front, in the wake of that. Should hopefully have some news to announce later this year.

Nobel?

Giving out prizes is a profession for people besides Drew Carey and Pat Sajack?

It is kind of crazy how podcasting has taken off. I got into it about 8 years ago myself and there is some really great material out there both in fiction and non-fiction. It is kind of the new comic-book medium.

I should have said cost intensive, what was I thinking

Stuff like Archive 81 and Homecoming definitely got their stuff off the ground.

Listened to the first 4 episodes while in the garage and walking the dog.

It is certainly well produced and easy to listen to. Helped pass the time and I will finish it. But...

At this point, I just don't find the story that engaging or any of the players to be very sympathetic (possible exception being john John's wife). Maybe there is a huge twist coming that I don't see. Most likely they killed John John because he was a relatively clean cop.

So far you have typical sheriff's department that is more focused on power and views the position as a jobs program from their family, a dead sheriff's deputy, a prosecutor that despite his protests seems to give unearned deference to the established power structures.

All that said, true crime ain't my jam, so I am definitely the last person you should listen to.

I don't know how to comment other than to spoil it, but I would listen to the entire thing first. As I explained earlier in the thread, Lori, John-John's wife, is the main character of the eventual TV series, and if you don't find her sympathetic, I don't know what to tell you. A recently widowed mother of three young boys, who sets out to prove that her husband was murdered, not accidentally killed in the line of duty, is about as sympathetic as it gets, IMO. But to each his own.

Please do this one next. Another crazy story of 1 cop killing his partner, and another guy was blamed for it.

This one sounds super familiar. I think someone already optioned the rights?

Not that I'm aware of but that doesn't mean much. I've posted <edit> the link <edit> on here a few times over the years so you may have read it previously.

I said she was the most sympathetic.

Listened to the 5th yesterday. Her lawyer is intriguing. But at this point John John is not a sympathetic victim. At this point it sounds like he knew they were a dirty department but he kept working there. Yes I expect you to quit a job if you have witnessed your employer commiting crimes.

And again, true crime ain't my jam. I can and do appreciate what you have done here and wish you success l.

He was literally in the middle of trying to transfer to another department in another city. What's he supposed to do, quit right then and there, and have his family go without his salary? They were already struggling to make ends meet.

I get that not every story is for everyone, and that's totally fine, but chiming in with these nonsensical critiques, before even finishing the pod, is such a weird move, especially while continuing to repeat that true crime isn't your thing.
Duncan Idaho

Yeah I do expect him to quit. It might be due to the fact that I am in Alabama and have dealt with how corrupt the sheriff's departments are in the part of the country, I have zero sympathy for members of these sheriff's departments.

Again me not caring about these characters doesn't mean I can't appropriate the quality and effort of the production.

"When a K-9 officer in the Scott County, Tennessee, Sheriff's Department winds up shot at the hands of his partner.."

The dog shot him?!

Perfect timing to see this thread ... leaving on a road trip tomorrow. I listened to Borderlands already, which I guess is Season 1 and this story is now Season 2.

Just caught up and loved it. That poor host seemed like he was about to lose his mind with some of the folks in Tennessee.

Just so happened to have seen this thread the day after the final episode came out.

Binged the podcast during an afternoon and the next morning.

Intriguing story, and another in a long line of examples of complacency leading to corruption that is only exposed through tragedy.

Odd that the podcast host's wife and her father have the history they do with the area, but that's probably why he dug into the story given the familiarity with the area.

I understand why you want to call it Carson County. Might be confusing for the first couple of episodes of your show, but would make complete sense once the county's history is explained.

Thanks for sharing this one with us.

Oh, nice, that's awesome.

I appreciate your thoughts as well.

And yeah, it's looking more and more like Version of Events will be the title, but we'll see.

In other news, it sounds like we just landed a director, and a certain actor/pop star from Tennessee is currently reading for the role of Marty. So things are progressing nicely, but who knows where it all lands.

Can't believe they got Dolly Parton to read for this. Outstanding!

Ha, yeah. I saw his wife on Kimmel the other night, promoting her show Candy on Hulu, and Kimmel asked if her and her husband ever wanted to star in a project together. She said absolutely, but they want to play "adversaries." That's when it hit me that JT is from Tennessee, where the story takes place, and that they're each roughly the age of the two main characters in the story, who just so happen to be facing off against each other. I told this to the head of the company we've partnered with, she loved the idea, happens to be from Tennessee herself (one of the reasons she loves the project so much), knows JT well, and sent it to him the next day. He's super busy, though, so who knows when he'll get around to reading the pilot/listening to all episodes of the podcast. In the meantime, we're locking down a director, and then hopefully things will speed up a bit from there.

Damn, that would get this a lot of attention if he and her join.

Totally. It would be "splashy" for sure. Then our dream would be Josh Brolin for his dad/Sheriff Jim Carson, to round out the three main leads. But again, it's so early, and could all go in a hundred different ways, so who knows...

Really enjoyed listening to it.

Just finished it and it seemed like each episode went by quickly.
