I went to the thing he did at Rudder in early 2013. They let us watch the third season premier 9 days before it aired on HBO. When it was time for Q&A, someone yelled out FINISH THE DAMN BOOK ALREADY!

That was NINE years ago.

To quote my dad, "I don't have a lot of years left, and this a-hole can kiss my ass."

Unfortunately it's pretty obvious he's written himself into a corner, knows everyone hates the King Bran ending, and has way too many plot threads to wrap up

Yeah, during the show run, my brother and I used to joke about how much baloney he has to slice before he even gets close to the end.

Characters still alive in the book-verse include

Stannis
Ramsey and Roose Bolton
Barristan Selmy
Margarey, Loras, Mace, and Olenna Tyrell
Basically everybody in Dorne outside of Mando
Fake Aegon Targaryen who never made the show

I think it's less painted into a corner and more he's fat and lazy and content with all the money he has. He's not going to finish

Random tangent, i have seen an uptick in people writing "mind bottling" and it is infuriating.
While some might be because they don't know better, in going to give a little slack thanks to Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory.

He also has to dispose of these tangents that never made the show:

Mance Rayder, alive and posing as a bard
Fake Arya, married off to Ramsey
Reanimated Catelyn Stark

Even worse than Stannis are all the people who should have been in Season 5 - then it really hits how much GURM has to wrap up. All the Baratheon hangers-on, Mance/Rattleshirt, Rickon is still alive, Jeyne freaking Westerling, Fake Arya/Jeyne, Val who never made the show (but I am convinced will play a role in this spinoff as Jon's love interest if it ever gets made), a bunch of useless Dothraki because who knows when Dany will sail West, Alleras, etc etc etc

Honestly more so than for his own employment, I bet Kit just hated the ending as much as most of the fanbase did.

This sounds like something Billy Dee Williams would have done with the character of Lando back in the 80s

"You see now George, we pull back and reveal Lando is actually a Jedi AND a smuggler AND a Mandalorian".

I'll take a one-off Cinemax movie about the book relationship between Cersei and Taena Merryweather.

The working title has me wondering what the series might be called. The story itself could play into it, but something general could work.

King Beyond the Wall
Beyond the Wall
The White Wolf
The Last Dragon
Lord Snow
Aunt ****er

No matter what, I hope we get a cheesy voiceover to start "I'm Jon Snow. Turns out I did want it. I'm off to kill my cousins now and reclaim what's mine. There's sure to be some wacky things along the way, but things usually works out for me." [big thumbs up and grin staring into the camera]

If you look at him throughout his career, he's never been lazy. One of the ongoing themes during the wait for ADWD was that he was always releasing a new anthology (Wild Cards in particular) or going to another con.

I think it's one of two things:

  • He's burned out. GRRM has never completed anything so broad as this. Tuf Voyaging is probably closest, but that was much more episodic.
  • He has anxiety about making the last two books absolutely perfect, which has been compounded by the show's popularity and the reaction to the ending.

My guess is the second one, considering the work on this show, producing the other HBO show, and the additional works he's put out in the universe since ADWD was released.

Apathy level is pretty high but Jon doesn't make sense. There is literally nothing alive north of the wall to even be a threat for likely decades or even centuries if people migrate back up there.

Introducing the white walkers again would just negate everything that has already happened.

What is the conflict supposed to be?

Also, wasn't there supposed to be an Arya spin off that would make WAY more sense and I guess was cancelled?

In the absence of the White Walkers, the ice and snow in the north begins to melt due to climate change revealing a warm and stable land of plenty. However, the ice melt causes the seas to rise and submerge King's Landing. King Bran declares all of the people from the lands south of The Wall must now try to migrate north. In a ironic role-reversal, Jon must unite the wildlings and The Night's Watch to stand against King Bran's invaders from the South!

The nerf to Bran is that he just doesn't gaf about what is going on with everyday life.

I remember reading a blog of his, before the show was even a thing I think, that he basically was trying to figure out an adequate way to get from where the last book left off to the next big plot point he had in mind.
Thats probably not a great summary of what he said, but it was something to that effect.

What if they made FAegon a thing? Bran is too busy being a tree to care, Aegon gets a hold of dragonbinder/Drogon and attacks Westeros.

Nah, sounds kinda dumb when I type it out.
