I should have seen Nirvana when I was 13 but my 16 year old brother burned his extra ticket since he didn't want me to go...

Tom Petty at the Woodlands Pavilion at least twice.

Scott Weiland in STP at the Astro Arena. This was my first concert and I was on the front bar in front of the bassist. My brother felt bad about Nirvana.

BB King at the House of Blues in Houston.

Dusty Hill in ZZ Top at the Summit.

Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters. ACL and Reliant Arena

Carl Wilson in the Beach Boys in Vegas.

I remember going to one of those Buzzfest concerts in Houston around 2007 or so and saw Chris Cornell. What I remember most was that he was ridiculously bone-thin. He put on a good show.

He died about 10 years later.

Some folks who haven't been mentioned yet ... they may not be legends like a Merle or EVH but still were pretty famous during their time:

  • Buddy Rich and his band at Disney World back in the '80s.
  • Jazz trumpet great Maynard Ferguson at Houston's Arena Theater in the '70s.
  • Al Jarreau at Southern Star Ampitheatre in the '90s.
  • Dan Fogelberg at the Summit a couple of times.
  • Paul Revere -- the "mad man of rock 'n roll" and leader of Paul Revere & the Raiders -- at Andy Williams Moon River Theater in Branson.

And saddest of all, I saw David Cassidy a few years before his death at the Grand in Galveston. He was clearly not in good health (and under the influence) and he struggled to make it through the show, at times almost mocking the people who had come to see him. After that, I quit going to oldies shows because they can be too depressing.

If we're including parents I think my dad's list is pretty good.

Beatles
Hendrix
The Doors
Ray Charles
Bo Diddley
Steppenwolf
ZZ Top (The Moving Sidewalks)

Several others but I don't know who's dead or alive now. I remember him telling a story about Jim Morrison being extremely late to the stage, the other guys just kind of killing time until he got out there, and then when he finally appeared he was so ****faced he couldn't remember the lyrics to anything. They struggled through a song or two and then just left. End of show. No refund.

Dad was a fine arts major in the 60s with a lot of time on his hands and a quick trigger when he'd hear about ticket giveaways on the radio. When asked about which bands he saw, his answer is usually "all of them".

Edit: since people are listing EVH and Tom Petty and the guys from that era, yes, he saw them too.

Dad learned a lot in college.

He freely admits that he didn't learn a thing at the actual school. In fairness, he said that his professors rarely showed up either.

You wouldn't know it from his artwork. He does an amazing job drawing dogs.
