I hope this means we will lose the terrible HBO Max platform for good.

Streaming service HBO Max will combine with Discovery Plus for US subscribers during the summer of 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery said Thursday, detailing the plans for a move that it has telegraphed ever since the company was formed by a megamerger earlier this year.

Quote:

The plan to combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus is a "main priority," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said Thursday, in a discussion of the company's streaming strategy. The two services have 92 million subscribers collectively, and Warner Bros. Discovery said it anticipates adding more than 40 million more members by 2025. By comparison, Netflix, the world's biggest subscription streaming service, has nearly 221 million.

Quote:

The latest news comes after reports of an escalating number scuttled shows, movies and other projects. Most recently, the movie Batgirl had its release scrapped Tuesday, despite the fact that the film (with a reported $90 billion budget)the fact that the movie was already well into post-production. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery killed CNN Plus, a streaming service complement to the 24-hour news network, within about three weeks of its launch.

Assume the above is a misprint, should read $90 million.

HBO Max has been the best streaming platform (interface AND original content) for all of 2022, maybe longer. So I say to you, sir, from the bottom of my heart: DAFUQ???

Agreed. I'll take the HBO Max layout and structure over Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and Paramount.

Really? I'm fine with the content, but I hate the app. Am I crazy? It looks like it... I do agree Prime is a f'ing disaster.

Wild thread. You guys never noticed that, from an episode page, there's not a huge, obvious button to play the next episode? Hope the auto-play to next episode worked...if not you're digging around for the "more episodes" button. But there ARE 16 extras you don't want to watch at your fingertips.

Who actually cares about Discovery? Is Shark Week all they have going for them?

I just looked up their shows. It is basically what my MIL's husband watches at an extremely loud volume.

Gold Rush
Deadliest Catch
Expedition X
Moonshiners
Alaska the Last Frontier
Morbo the Annihilator

No, you're not. It's awful, and worse than Disney's app.

Which is saying something.

HBO max app is terrible. Crashes a lot, downloads only work properly about half the time. Hope they change it.

I like the UI/ux of the hbomax aps. But they tend to be slower than anything else and until recently they crashed more than anything else.

Not that this is any better, but Discovery also includes TLC (90 Day Fiance, My 600 Lbs Life, Sister Wives, Say Yes to the Dress) and HGTV (all those house flipping shows including Chip and Joanna aka the reason your wife wants to drag you to Waco to see some store). So its all the stuff your MIL watches when your FIL passes out in the recliner

So does this mean if I already have Discovery+ (through my unlimited plan with Verizon), I'll get HBOMax included now?

As noted below, with HGTV, they own way more than you think thats just not blatantly under the discovery name.

My wife loves home renovation shows and there are a lot of them on Discovery +, which is why we have it. I feel the exact opposite about these apps, HBO Max hasn't given us any problems, but Discovery + crashes the entire TV 50% of the time. It's horrible.

There is a rule in cyber security that is basically "writing a good encryption algorithm is hard and your company isn't smart enough to do it. So just use an established one."

I don't get why so many of these companies try to roll their own applications. You are a media company not a technology company.

HBO is pretty buggy, and the way they have the side bar set up is very odd.

Other than that it's pretty good. Prime is the worst interface, set up etc. Hulu can have loading issues, especially with the live stuff. I hate Netflix's new update where you have to scroll down through 15 featured shows before you can actually look at their library. Disney is good at everything besides the fact that I can never hear anyone speak when watching something.

Agree on the HBO Max app being slow to load and scroll. I would love a new, faster interface. It seems like there is always a lag when scrolling through content. But it is my favorite service along with Disney+ due to content. Do not need nor want Discovery+ unless it is added at no additional cost to HBO Max.

HBO Max upon launch was TERRIBLE (for me, at least), but I haven't had issues with it in a long time.

Agree in general but when all the security fails it can be drastic and companies feel like keeping everything in house is more secure.

Many broadcasters have been ransomwared for a ton of money on top of the loss of billing when they can't access the systems used to generate commercial logs or on air delivery.

Prime's is so bad, they just redid it. And it STILL sucks.

For me the television app works great and the mobile app is pretty terrible. I have yet to download something for later viewing and been able to watch it on a plane, etc.

HBO Max app is visually appealing but it errors out on Apple TV a lot and has some annoying QOL issues. Prime app is literally the worst app ever. Netflix is still the easiest to use with the most QOL features, but it can feel cluttered and overwhelming on the home screen.

The HBO app is not great, but the content is vastly superior to other services like Netflix, in my opinion. Instead of pumping out hundreds and hundreds of new shows, they seem to be more selective and what they are producing is of higher quality. I bet that changes under Discovery.

HBOMax is content that needed a vehicle. Netflix et Al was the cab looking for passengers.

For the life of me, I'll never understand the UI wars over any of these streaming apps. They all work almost exactly the same except for very minor differences on the edges here and there.

The only real differences I notice amongst any of these is that Hulu's is the least reliable for me and I have to frequently kill the app, reboot it, and possibly log back in which is GD annoying.

And then the Disney app is about 10 clicks lower in volume than all others which I've never understood and wish someone had an answer for this.
